Can someone recommend a good fishing pole for an 8 year old?

He has out grown the kiddie fishing poles and when I went to the store, I was overwhelmed with fishing poles that were from $10-over $100. I want something durable and that is not too complicated. Any suggestions?

Ds2 is 8 and has a pole made by Zebco w/ a closed reel. I have no idea how much dh paid for it, but I know he wouldn't have spent a bunch. Ds2 has used it for about a yr and it's holding up well. He's had pretty good luck w/ it, too- he's caught blue gill, crappie, and a small mouth bass : )

I would not recommend the collapsable ones- that's what ds2 started out w/ at 7 y/o, and it didn't last very long.

Here's a link to the one he has:

Zebco is good, also the Ugly Stick's are too. I am 31 and still fish with a Ugly. My dd likes her zebco pole but likes an open face reel, so we just bought her that and changed it out. Don't remember the brans of the reel.

I bought my son one from WalMart. It is the Shakespeare brand and it works great! I think I paid like $30 for it?

my hubby said any junior fishing pole is ok. Zebco might be the best.

My boys each have a Zebco and have had them for 2 or 3 years now.

All 3 of my boys also have a Zebco. I didn't buy them so I am not sure how much they cost. Their grandfather bought them for the kids. And he is the one that takes them fishing.
