Earthquake question: Where were you last year on 8-23 ?
Last year many of us on the East Coast experienced a 5.8 earthquake. If you remember that share your story about where you were on August 23, 2011.
I live in Maryland. I was in a training class we do every summer before we go back to work. There were about 100 of us and we all felt it. Outside the surrounding area of the building where we were some office buildings, the mall, some stores...EVERYONE felt it. First we were in shock and were not sure what happened and all of us just sat there and looked at each other asking each other, "Did you feel something"? I am sure most of us were thinking " We don't have Earthquakes in Maryland" Most of my co workers and I all rushed out of the building to call our loved ones to see if they were okay, most of us could not get any reception. Eventually things settled down and we all went back inside the building, finally being able to leave a couple of hours later.
My parents were on vacation in North Carolina and did not feel it, but they did know immediatly what happened...I think from Facebook or Twitter or something. I remember feeling upset that they didn't bother to call me to see if we were okay.
I was at home sitting on the end of my bed, talking to my mom on the phone. I thought I felt the bed shake and kind of thought maybe the kids were running around or something. But my mom yelled into the phone, "Was that an earthquake??" lol We're in PA. so we didn't feel it as a 5.8.
I was in a 5.8 in California in 1991, though!
ETA: I've felt more of other earthquakes that we've had here over the years than I did this one. I think because when we have local earthquakes they don't feel as "shaky" to me, they feel (and sound) like a big "BANG". Like you just hit a brick wall. They haven't have the side to side shaking like the 8/23 or the rolling feeling like the one in CA.
I'm in IN and didn't feel anything, but my cousin was on a photo shoot at an elem school in Fort Hood, MD and definitely felt it. He helped make sure all the kids there got out of the school ok.
I did, however, feel the one that hit southeastern IL in Apr. 2008. Dh and I were awakened by the house shaking. He was like, "What was that?!" Even though I'd never been in one before, having lived in northern CA, I had a pretty good idea- "I think that was an earthquake!" The kids, of course, slept through it.
I still find it amusing that after living in CA for 4 1/2 yrs, the 1st earthquake I felt was in IN : )

We're in south central PA and felt it. I was sitting at my dining room table reading or doing something and felt the house moving. It was really strange b/c it wasn't like a shaking or rumbling more like a swaying feeling. I thought I was imagining it at first and asked my sons if they felt it they said yes. Then I went to my dd's room and asked her if it felt like the house moved and she said yes and that she thought she was imagining it too. Then we heard that it was an earthquake. It was freaky.
It's kind of funny too b/c years ago, when I was a teen, I spent the summer with my aunt and uncle in Van Nuys CA. While I was there, there were 2 small earthquakes and I slept through both of them, lol.
My kids slept right through it to. My older two were home, sleeping which is why they were not answering their cell phones, or the house phone the few times I was able to get reception and actually call. My two younger boys were at my friends house.
sleeping on the couch... taking a nap... and the house shook... scared the sh!t out of me...!
I was at home about to get my 2 younger kids from school. I didn't feel it and had NO idea about it until my kids got off the bus telling me their school had an earthquake. They said the ground was shaking a little bit and the lights in the classroom were swaying a little. They said that they had to stand outside for a bit before being loaded onto the buses.
The other parents at the bus stop were questioning this 'earthquake' as well, so I came home and turned on Fox & CNN and sure enough it was ALL over both stations.
When my 3 older kids came home I asked them if they felt anything and none of them did. At the time it happened all 3 were changing classes. So, that might be why they didn't feel it. They also had to stand outside for a bit before going back to class.
I'm from CA so I have been through my fair share of earthquakes. I do know what they feel like.
Oh, and I'm in WV.

Upstairs folding laundry. I'm in MA, and while I didn't feel anything, my husband did at work. Being born and raised in Southern California though, I got a giggle out of the reactions from those who have never experienced an earthquake. 5.8 is barely a blip on the radar to me.
I was driving in my car. I didn't even feel it. I remember walking into the gas station and they were asking me if i had just felt that. I was like "What are you talking about?" I was kind of pissed I missed it. Lol!
