Do any of you have children diagnosed with OCD?

I was just informed my 6yr old dd may have OCD. She has always been a perfectionist and gotten frustrated very easily but the past few months it has just gotten a lot worse. If things are not perfect or she doesnt get sumthin right the first time she just flips out to the point that she is crying so hard she hyperventilates. She has has developed this habit of wiping obsessively after using the bathroom. She clogs the toilet daily and can use a roll of toilet paper in just a couple hours. After her teacher sent home a note I decided that I really needed to talk to her Dr about whats going on. They had me pick up an evaluation packet with papers for me and her teacher to fill out. I also talked to my psychologist about her behaviors and whats going on with her and she agrees with the possibility of it being OCD. She says at this point she doesnt want to label it until she can really figure out what is going on. Dd and I are supposed to meet with her next week then we will go from there. Have any of you ever dealt with this before? If so what behaviors does your child exhibit? I feel so terrible for her. I read that a lot of kids with OCD hide their rituals and behaviors because they feel it makes them weird or crazy. Id hate to think she has been dealing with this by herself and feeling bad about herself. This sucks.

My child has not, but I have. I live with it daily. I did try to hide my behaviors for years before they had to come out, and I still refer to it as my own personal brand of crazy.

i also have ocd and so does my father i have lost a lot of friendships because of it and i know it has to bother my dd because i have to have things a certain way but so far she has not shown any signs of it i pray she doesnt have it to because it is a struggle the only advice i can give is to try to keep things consistant and organized i know if my home environment is chaotic i feel like im going to jump out of my skin i need a quiet calm place to go and regroup every now and then

My almost 6 yr old has ocd. He is a perfectionist and if things dont happen the way he think they should he get angry. If things are out of place he cant do anything until its fixed. Examples being ge was going to eat at my moms house and it was may 1st but my moms calendar was still on april. He could not eat until she changed it....or in school they had blankets held up by velcro to close off certain things in the classroom and the one covering the blocks was crooked. He could not do his school work until it was straightened.

The shoes in our house have to be lined up a certain way and his cars and books too

My DS has been diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder, with the neuropsych eval leaving the possibility open for an OCD dx down the road. He was four when diagnosed, so he was young and hi we're hesitant to put a specific label to his anxiety. For us, he worries about everything. I mean every little thing. When we do something new it's preceded by nights of not sleeping and question after question of what he should expect. He's really doing well now, but his teachers make little accommodations through out the day for him, and Ive learned how to help him with a lot of stuff to avoid the meltdowns because things aren't going the "right" way. He sees a therapist weekly and he has done wonders with him!! He's come so far since his dx. His teacher last year told me he presented as a typical child and if she didn't know, she would never guess. Again though, because she knew she had all sorts of preventative things she did all day to help. She actually told me he was one of the best behaved kiddos in the room. This is a big change from the preschooler who tore his classroom apart because the kids didn't line up when the teacher asked. Once we knew what was going on, we were all able to help him... So if your DD is diagnosed, it may be a blessing in disguise. HUGS!

My son was dx at 4 with tourettes, ocd and rage/odd. It was a constant struggle with him.

But we have come leaps and bounds! Turns out strep can also cause these behaviors. I suggest you look for the book the natural treatment of Tourettes, ocd... And go to the website acn latitudes. After reading this book we started changing a lot of things, foods, diet, type of TV b/c the flicking of the light can trigger issues for my son, started adding epsom salt baths, etc!

At 6, my son was dx with PANDAS (pediatric autoimmune neurological disorder associated with strep). We realized his issues were actually being caused b/c the strep bacterial had crossed the blood brain barrier and was attacking his brain. We started with anti biotics and his symptoms dropped even more. This said, when he was 8 he had scarlet fever/scarlettina and everything we gained was almost lost.

At this point they suspected a brain tumor b/c he lost his hearing on one side. Plus was having tremors and ocd behaviors. Then we met with an immunolgist...he has saved our son!

Turns out our son could not full recover b/c he was eating foods he was allergic to. Once we removed all allergans, and supplemented his immune system all his "symptoms (TS, OCD, Rage)" are gone!!!

To me the body exhibits these signs when there is something wrong. Most clinicians dx the symptoms based on history and observations. They fail to look deeper to see what the cause is to why this 4-8yr old is exhibiting all these symptoms.

Read the book Saving Sammy...it will be an eye opener. Also look into the feingold diet. This diet will help your child! Also look at removing all gluten/wheat/caseine for at least a 3 month trial.

Pm me if you need more readings or info! It's a long road but getting answers and seeing changes is priceless!

Good luck,
Jen

My 3 year old has SPD, major anxiety, major adhd and OCD tendencies...so we are going to take her in to see the psychologist end of September to get the diagnosis with the OCD....it's definately a struggle especially with everything mixed together.
