I very briefly taught kindergarten many years ago and remember having a color of the day and lots of center work. When I taught 1st, I introduced reading. My adult kids were not allowed to learn to read when they went through Kindergarten and parents were discouraged from starting them writing because the teachers wanted to introduce correct pencil grip. Here I am starting all over again with little kiddos, and during my son's kindergarten interview last month, I told the teacher he has a very rudimentary hand grip . She told me she doesn't even give them pencils until October and they work on building their hand muscles at first. So he came home with a homework sheet today and he is supposed to write his name, I, can, and about four color words for homework. Um, what happened to no pencil work until October and teaching hand grip and letters first? I kept him with a sitter until this year, and he is at a definite disadvantage. I told my dh our 2 year old is going to need to go to a preschool next year and then pre-k so he is ready.
