When I was little, I had subscriptions to Horizons, Jack & Jill,Science something, and Weekly Reader.  Is this still done?  I've tried with the Nat Geo Jr edition but with limited success.

My 7yo gets Highlights (as a gift from one set of grandparents) and will be getting Sports Illustrated for Kids for his birthday from another set of grandparents.

Our son has Boy's Life from Boy Scouts, our daughter loves American Girl. They were neither interested in Highlights. When they were really little they had the Nat. Geo. for kids and kind of liked it.

We get Zootles and National Geographic kids.

We've been getting Zootles since my younger son was three. He wasn't very interested at first, but now he loves them. He also loves rereading the old ones.

We also get Lego magazine which is free. It's basically a cleverly camouflaged Lego ad, but he loves it. There are pictures to color, pictures of other kids' Lego creations and stories.
