Hi I'm a twenty five year old mother of a six year old son with adhd and a set of twin girls that are three and a half. My son was diagnosed about two months ago with adhd and agressive tendincies. He was prescribed focalin xr 10 mg. It worked great for awhile but he seems to be reverting back to old ways. I was hesitant about putting him on meds to begin with, I really don't want the meds to be increased. Does anyone have any advice on how to deal with this naturally? He has been throwing tantrums to the point he is almost out of control. When he is in that state he doesn't seem to be able to focus on anything or anyone.

The only advice I can offer is to be patient. Finding the right med and dosage can take a long time. Talk to his doctor.

I'm sorry you are going through this. Some of the ADHD meds side effects can cause aggressive behaviors. Every child responds differently to different meds. Your son may need an adjustment or a different one. I would call his Dr. And report this. Keep a journal of everything. Some foods can effect the way children with adhd responds. If you know a good Naturalpathic Dr. You could look into more natural treatments. Best wishes, keep us updted.

Just be patient. It took almost 2 years to find the right med and dosage combination to help my son. It will be rough in the mean time but worth it in the long run. Like the poster said above, I kept a journal of everything that he ate and what behaviors followed and his day to day schedule to try and find a pattern. Good luck

Talk to his doctor. Maybe he needs to try a different medicine. Sometimes when we grow or our bodies get used to the medicines and we have to change the dose or medicine.

Also try taking a trip to the book store or library. Check out 2 books. 1,2,3 Magic and Parenting by Love and Logic's. Both are great reads. And they offer wonderful tips on how to deal with children that are difficult. It takes time and patience to learn to handle a child with ADHD. And lots of love. My son was officially diagnosed at the age of 6 with ADHD. But it took YEARS of trying different things until he reached the age to be allowed medication.  We(doctors, therapist, dad and I) knew he had ADHD.

Do you have a daily routine that you follow? If not, I suggest making one for him. It will help him to know what to expect and what is expected of him everyday.

Is he seeing a therapist? Or a behavioral specialist? Both can help teach him and yourself coping skills.

I agree with what everyone else said.  Patience is key when you're dealing with ADHD and medication.  It can take a long time for you to find the right dosage.  Plus, it will keep changing as they grow.  My son was diagnosed when he was 5; he's now 7.  Since then, he's gone through 4 difference medications, and different dosages for each until we found what works best for him.   Anytime you have concerns, let his prescribing doctor know.  They may adjust his prescription or change it to something different.  Good luck!

my suggestion: call the local mental health facility and start him in therapy. They can teach him (and you) tools to help regulate his aggressive mood. (my daughter has ASD and doing this exact same thing for her lol).. sometimes it takes an outside eye.. also, what was recommended for us was to pick up the book 1 2 3 magic.. it helps with raising the "difficult" child. good luck!
