Elementary School Kids Elementary School Kids

do your kids' schools have them?

we got a recorded call from the principal tonight. local businesses are partnering with the school to offer prizes for students who are in perfect attendance over the next 2 weeks. hard thing to do for many, during flu season. they also were offering pizza parties to the classrooms with the best attendance in the school over the next 2 weeks.

the principal then went on to talk about how important it is that kids go to school every day they are able. etc etc. it stinks that attendance is such that she feels that she needs to say that to all of the parents.

anyway, i feel bad for the kids who get sick and miss out on the rewards. it's a nice idea by the school though.

I totally agree with you.

I hate the practice...

1) it encourages parents to send sick kids to school, or the kids to lie and say they feel fine to get the prize. There are already enough parents who send sick kids to school because they can't/won't take off work

2) it punishes kids who are honestly sick and stay home in bed to recover.

An education is important...being held like cattle in a school building isn't! Sometimes a child can learn more valuable things about life by learning compassion, understanding, and the value of learning OUTSIDE the box!

If it's a once a week thing,or even monthly...yes, it can get excessive...but 1~2 days off a year to do something special with family isn't going to undermmine a child"s education....it will strengthen it!

Absence/truancy rules need to be in place to keep neglectful parents in line and for the safety of kids who's parents don't give a rats (_!_)

The majoriity, are being harassed over their kid being homestly sick, or absent for Drs appts is crazy and a waste of already taxed resources!

One of many reasons I pulled my kids from traditional public school.

I don't have a problem with attendance awards.  All you have to do is read the thread on "mental health days" to understand WHY a school needs to make attendance a priority.  The fact is too many parents, as demonstrated by that thread, do NOT think attendance is important and are sending that same message to their kids at a very young age.  SMH

Our schools do them and I think they're idiotic. My oldest has a medical condition, and a specialist that is an hour away-there is no way he'll ever get perfect attendance. He works just as hard as the other kids,if not harder due to the fact that he is making up work on his own rather than with the teacher right there.Complete waste of time,IMO.

At the end of the year they get a reward.

They stopped that because kids were coming to school sick. I like it better this way.

Our school doesn't do anything, but that's fine with me--even though DS did have perfect attendance in kindergarten!  I wouldn't have a problem with recognizing it after the fact with something like a certificate, but to encourage ahead of time with a pizza party is going a little too far...especially during the winter and especially during this year's flu problem!

Our school is so overboard on it!! They only do perfect attendance at the end of the year and that must include never being late to class or getting picked up early for doc or dentist appt. They do a big thing with a limo ride and pizza party and all kinds of stuff! I feel like a whole year of perfect attendance is just so out of the question! I mean even if we manage to go a whole year without getting even one sick day the fact remains that the dentist office will not schedule certain appt. for after 2pm so if one of the kids has to have a cavity filled then it has to be done before 2 pm and that means leaving school early! I would like to see them do it for maybe a month or something like that...that seems more reasonable to me.

I don't think we have anything like that..... our school is more likely to say "stay home, you're sick"

my son has missed like 11 days this year, he got the flu which took up 5 of them, and other various colds
