My daughter's bday is right around a major holiday so when we have sent out invitations we have sent them out one month in advance. The turn out has been really small so now we're sticking with family parties or a special dinner out for her, seems like her feelings get hurt when none of her friends show up =(

The right time frame probably depends on your school & group of kids.  Here, we usually get invites the week of the party.  People either can come or they can't.

I was glad to get mine out a week ahead of time.
