We go and see the play How the Grinch Stole Christmas every year and I give my daughter loony braids. Basically they are high pigtails and then you braid each one but instead of equal sized parts, use two skinny strands of hair and one fat strand. The braids end up having crooked angles.

Take a sandwhich baggie with the ziplock.  And tightly rolling it upon itself starting from the ziplock side.  It actually creates a pretty strong "stick".  You can even put a popcicle stick or someting inside of it to make it stronger, so its like a pipecleaner :)

I've never tried this, but I wonder if you couldn't substitute the wire for *eeeek* underwire from an old bra?! Could embarrass her if it came out, but it could be interesting??? Hahahahahaha...
