My son is 7yrs old, 3'8" and 65lbs and I make him sit in a booster. From what I understand the weight and height is at least 80lbs and 48" tall.... to be out of a carseat or booster. But you have to be both... not one or the other.

At that age/size, he needs to either be in a booster or you could harness him in a car seat that allows for extended harnessing.

He should be in a booster until age 8 and 4'9. Both not either or. My almost 9 yr old could still be harnessed in certain seats.

Most places you are supposed be either 8 years old or 4'9" and 80 lbs. Check your state laws but I would say yes he still needs a car seat.

I just wanna mention, some older vehicles only have lap belts in the back seat. If this is the case then a booster seat would be inappropriate, because they are only for use with shoulder belts.

DD is nearly 10 yo and still in a booster. She is only 68 lbs and at about 58 inches is about an inch from the minimum height.
I will probably not make her use the booster anymore once she turns 10 at the end of April, and can sit properly.
