Taking Kids Out of School for a Spring Getaway -- Do or Don't?

by Ericka Sóuter

lex and calebNow that my son's at the age where I don't break out in sweat at the thought of traveling with him, I love family getaways. Every trip is like a big adventure as far as he is concerned, especially if that means hopping aboard a train (which in his mind MUST be related to Thomas) or a plane (where he can soar through the sky like Superman). Most of the time, we like to keep these trips to spring breaks or summertime, but we have found more and more opportunities to travel when school is still in. So what's a responsible mom to do?

My husband and I are huge believers in the importance of education. In fact, we don't think the school year is long enough. That said, we also believe that you only live once. If we have the chance to take our amazing little guy on a trip that we all will enjoy, we are all for it. That's especially true as the weather begins to warm up. There is nothing like being able to enjoy another city or tourist attraction when the weather hits those perfect spring temps -- around 65 to 72 degrees. Breathing in that crisp air is so refreshing, so invigorating. It really is awesome.

Usually, the only time we take our kids out of school is when they are sick. Pink eye, strep throat, the flu. Ugh. That's no fun for anyone. Why not do it for an exciting reason too. Besides, it's so important to create special memories whenever we can. It's so easy to be consumed by the responsibilities and never-ending to-do lists of everyday life. I know most days, I am on auto-pilot. Get up, cook breakfast, pick out school clothes, make lunch, find something to wear to work, rush out the door just in time. It's nice to break up the monotonous routine every once in awhile. Everyone appreciates it -- kids and parents.

So I am all for playing hooky. It's great for the whole family. Just make sure they know what a special treat it is and that skipping school isn't something that they can do all the time. It promises to be among the best family memories you will have.

Nope.  We schedule that stuff for when there is no school.  They get enough days off, they don't need more.

Yes, I am taking her out this year for the last week of school for a family vacation with my mom and brother's family. and in 2015 we are going to DisneyWorld in February so she will miss a week then as well. She is in Kindergarten now and will be in 2nd grade in 2015. I probably wouldn't pull her out for a whole week once she is older though.

I have two boys in elementary school and I have let them stay home for vacations and special days.  I dont think there is anything wrong with it unless it becomes excessive!  When I was a kid my parents always took me and my brother on vacation during the school year because a lot of the times prices go up in the summer and its a way to save money.  We would usually go for a week long trip!  I would tell my teachers ahead of time and get a list of things I would need to do to get caught up! We havent taken our kids out of school yet for that long of a trip but we have kept them home for day trips.  Many times if you go to a museum or zoo etc. during the week and during the school year it is much less crowded and as a result more enjoyable.

Yep we did this year. And its not the first time. Its just that my husband and I work and we plan our vacations together, then just pull him, if we need too. This year we pulled him for an earlier spring break to go back home to Lousianna. We usually vacation 2-3 times a year. So sometimes we just have to.

haven't done it and probably wouldn't specially my oldest gets sick often so he misses plenty. Now I wish we could cause my husband's cousin is getting married in September but we won't be able to go because both kids will be in school and I don't think I would pull them for that.

We have and will again. We're taking them to a tattoo convention with us next month and they'll probably miss a day for that. BUT we do plan ahead and get the next days assignments and materials from their teachers before we do anything like that.
I also let them miss 2 days last year for a trip to Florida. It was planned around their vacation days but the days got taken and turned into makeup days. We went anyway.

Yup! Only on occasion though. We just took him out for a couple days earlier this month to go to a water park before the spring break crowd. It was an awesome trip =)
