How do the other parents drive in front of YOUR elementary school?

Posted by   + Show Post

I really hope that the parents in my town are just idiots.

Our elementary school recently went through some construction; before it was finished, the parents would constantly block the one-way street in front of the school when picking their kids up. Stalled parking(stopping your call in the middle of the street, usually to talk to someone who is parked or stalled as well) is really common here. It is one thing when someone does it on a deserted street (it is still ignorant, but at least it isn't backing up traffic), but to do it in front of a school that has just let out?? ARGH!!!!!

Anyway, after the construction was completed and a roundabout driveway was put in, I thought it would change the way people, no. At the beginning of school, the point is to drive up, drop your kid off, and leave. Several parents will drive up, PARK, go inside with their kid, so that the rest of us get backed up and either have to wait until that moronic parent comes back out, or try to maneuver around the parked vehicle.

One that happened several months ago infuriated me to no end. A grandma was there to pick up the granddaughter; she parked her car IN THE MIDDLE OF THE STREET, walked over to the school and was gone for a good 10 minutes. Who does that??

Another instance just happened the other day; I was there to drop my girls off at school. A truck was stopped on the curb of the roundabout, and other vehicles got in the other lane to pass it and go around. Once car was stopped beside the truck TO TALK TO THE TRUCK'S DRIVER; I am not shy, I honked so they would get out of the way.

I expect parents to be good role models for their children; I realize that isn't always the case, but it seems to me that most of the parents at my girls' school think that they are the most important and consideration for others isn't necessary.

What is it like at YOUR school??

The parents don't do too bad at all. It's the kids with permits driving with their parents that you have to watch out for. UGH! I wish they wouldn't do it in the morning. It's just too crazy then. Wait until after school, much less insane.

The parents at my kids school are pretty food about not parking in the way. I park in the parking lot and walk my son in. If you go through the drop off line, you aren't allowed to get out of the car. Pick up usually goes smoothly. What amazes me are the parents who SPEED through the parking lot! Also, the ones that don't look. I can't tell you how many times I've almost hit while dropping my son off!!

We have a large parking lot, and the front part of the parking lot has 1 way but two lanes (one you can stop and slow down in another you can pass all those people).

However I park cause when I go in I dont come back out lol. But Ive been parking in a new area not so close to the doors and I swear people think its okay to drive while watching their kids go in the school, lucky I know this so I dont just walk across the cross walk, I will wait and make sure a driver sees me before walking. I have almost been hit a few times thinking cause they have stopped to watch their young child go in, they will look before driving off (they dont).

The teachers direct the traffic at drop off and pick up.

Horrible at my DS's school - I have to park on a very busy street at a busy intersection and get out of car to get my child when they walk out of school as a class.  Some days there are very courteous drivers that stop and let me cross with my son other times, not so much.  The sad thing, it's usually the parent running late to pick up their own child that I have to watch out for.  They will run anyone down to get parked.  smh

My DD's school is great - they have a parent pick up line.  You stay in your car, pull into the line and have your number in your window.  3 cars pull up to the school curb at a time and the child/children are escorted by school staff to get in the cars which pull away and the next 3 cars in line pull up.  For parents going into the school, they usually park in an entirely different area to avoid all the parent pick up traffic.

It's just as bad. And we have a cop that sits on the corner during the whole thing. And this one woman who drives a HUGE SUV like it's a sports car. I can't even count all the times she also hit someone

We have 900 kids in our school and there is only 1 bus and only a handful of kids on it. Most of the kids either walk or are driven. With that in mind its not all that bad in comparison to some of these stories. It gets crazy crowded and we have cops come around sporadically to dole out tx and make sure it's under control. People often ignore the no left turn signal at the lot entrance but other than that there isn't too much that gets out of hand. I would not want to live anywhere on the same street as our school because the road is tight and getting in and out of the driveway has got to be a challenge every day.

We have a one way road, with curb parking along part of it plus enough room to pass the parked cars. It keeps moving...sometimes the cars pause to let someone pull in or out of the curb but nobody double parks or just sits there chatting.

Here in the afternoons all the parents pull in and park in the parking lot. Kids in kindergarten and first have to have someone walk up to get them, the rest walk to the cars.
In the mornings about half the parents pull in and park and the rest pull up to the door and drop the kids off.
It's not bad at all. There's tons of parents that hang around and talk but they are parked in the parking lot when they do it.

Quoting ambermario4ever:

My daughter school has drop off line. You drive through it and up to a covered curb where you have to pull up as far as you can and a teacher or safety pratrol child opens your car door and let's your child out of the car and you then drive away. Same thing in the afternoons at pick up but they are let out by grade so you get in the lines by what grade your child is in. But no parents get put of their cars at either drop off or pick up.

I just wish all schools were so organized!
