Often?

This is one of 2nd grade dds spelling words this week. She had some trouble and spelled it O-F-F-E-N because of my pronunciation. So, that's my question. How do you pronounce that word? I told her that the t is silent as in soften, but I know a lot of people do not pronounce it that way. I tried to Google it and I saw something that said so many people were mispronouncing it that in 1926 they made either way correct. I have no idea of that's true.

2 moms liked this

I say the "t", so I pronounce it exactly how it is spelled.

I pronounce it off-ten.

Tell her it's of & ten squished together.

That's exactly what I told her and she remembered. I just wondered how her teacher might pronounce it when she went to school. I just pulled out the dictionary and I guess either way is correct. I never knew.

That is one of the things I love about our spelling curriculum...it teachers to follow rules but also teaches "pronounce for spelling" because it acknowledges that English is screwed up! LOL

Often is one word I DO use the t but we do have other words that "you just have to learn."

I wonder if the pronunciation of this word might be a regional thing. Looks like I'm in the minority!

Either pronunciation is correct. I say the 't'.
