I'm looking for fun historical fiction novels on the westward expansion particularly the Oregon trail and the fort Laramie area. Any ideas?

I would suggest looking at the Who Was? book series.  There are books on a lot of different historical figures, places, and events.

I'm looking for something longer than those. While educational they go so fast I hate paying for them.

Have you asked your public librarian? He/she should be able to point some out to you - plus then you can check them out & it doesn't matter as much of they read them fast.

The 'Dear America' series has a few on the Oregon Trail & westward expansion.

Our library is tiny and they aren't any help. It is ran by elderly volunteers.
I'm not a fan of the dear America series. The journal style writing just doesn't flow well imo.

I just googled "children's novels about the oregon trail" and several options came up.

This one has stumped me. Nothing comes to mind.

Google might be a help.  If you know a fourth grade teacher they teach state history and should know of literature about the area.

Hmm... The only thing I can think of is the Dear America series or the Who Was series...

Google on the other hand is amazing..

There's a million more too, but these will give you some ideas anyway.
