If you could teach your child ONE valuable lesson in life, TODAY, what would that lesson be?

My sons are 6 and 3 years old.  The one lesson I would like to teach them right now, at this point in life is.....appreciation.

Appreciation for:

a place to live, a roof over their head

Clean water to drink and bathe in.

Electricity.  Light to read by, a tv to watch, video games to play.

Food to eat.  Not just the basics like fruit, veggies, meat and milk, but other stuff like sugary snacks.

Clothes to wear (too many, really) clothes that don't have holes (at least not bought that way) Name brand clothes.  Clothes that are clean and fit right.

Not to mention schools that you don't have to pay for (public)

and

the freedom of speech

and to worship as you please!

I would like to teach my children that they choose the way that they react to what happens to them in life.

I would teach them to value intelligence over brawn, and kindness/compassion over self-interest.

that is a very good question.  there are so many to teach them.  i'll have to think about that one for awhile.  i want to pick "the one" that will lead them to all the others.   hmmmm. . .  Hmm

I would teach my daughter to be unselfish, thankful and appreciative of what she has, and to respect hers and others property and feelings.  At 8 years old, she seems to be one of the most ungrateful children I know, and I don't know what I did to cause it.  Could some kids just "be" that way?

I would teach empathy, which is the foundation for compassion and love. When people can experience and know compassion for others, it helps them make the right choices in life.

He would understand why the bully teases him. And why little sister always wants to sit beside him. He would know when it's time to cheer for his team and when to shake hands with a rival.

And as an adult, he will know how to give someone bad news, how to comfort his wife on bad days, and when to give his kids a much needed hug.

I would teach my daughter to believe in herself. No matter what other's say, be true to yourself and believe that you are good enough for anything you'd like to do or be.
