I just started saving my coffee grounds, eggs shells and tator peels. I have them in a coffee can and its getting full. My question is - now what do I do and what else can be added to it? I did add some to my houseplants and they are thriving! Thanks !

I have been saving my eggs shells, but completely forgot about our used coffee grinds and fresh veggie and fruit trimmins. Thanks for reminding me. I have been reluctant to start a compost bin. Really don't have the money to buy one. Although I do have lots of left over scrap wood, and hog gates. Hmm that just gave me an idea. LOL Thank Collete for sharing.

This is what I was planning - just wondering if the weight is going to be a problem.  If it's half full it's going to weigh at least 80-90 lbs...

I like the garbage can idea as a composter. Thank you. I am using a bucket and lid from Lowes right now for my scraps etc.. I have 2 big plastic water barrels with lids (for livestock) that I will repurpose for my composter. Just got poor all the all water out. That is where my teenage boys can help me. It's great to have extra muscle around the house. Hee hee.

add tea bags mowed grass, leaves off other plants. uneaten veggies. oatmeal, ground dog food, fish scraps, hay, bone meal sea weed if available or lake moss if you cant get sea weed. alternate layer of newspaper, manure, grass clippings, manure, topsoil. compost starter tonic is 1/4 bottle of beer, 1/4 c amonia, added to 1 gal water. when it is dark rich and crumbly it is ready to add to your garden. cover with black plastic to bake better and add baking soda to control the smell. also add wood ashes. buy the book garden wisdom by jerry baker. he has great compost ideas. This is where I got the info given to you.
