I'm growing onions for the first time this year, and it's been quite a learning experience! First off, I planted them way too deep which may be part of my problem.
2 weeks ago the tops fell over and were turning brown, I was so excited because i knew they'd be ready soon! I smooshed the remaining ones over and left them in the ground for 10 days without watering them (although it may have rained once). Yesterday I dug them up. I noticed a pretty nasty onion smell and about 1/3 of them were soft or had soft spots. Anyone know what could have caused that? They are Texas Supersweet 1015.
The rest looked okay but were pretty small, 1.5 - 2 inches. What determines the size of the onion? How can I make them bigger next time?
Thanks for the help!!
