My son is 7 months and his doctor wants me to take him in at 9 months to get a flu shot. I have never had one myself but, have heard people say that I makes you sick, or it is only a "hit and miss" game. I heard that they "guess" what strand they are going to use so it is only something like 40% effective. Does anyone have any info for me and are you going to get your kids a flu shot?

by trekeysmommy on Sep. 5, 2008 at 11:42 PMthey changed the shots a couple years ago so it shouldnt make you sick. my hubby and his uncle used to ALWAYS get sick after a flu shot and now they dont. it is better for the child to get the shot than get the flu considering how bad it has been getting. wife to my best friend Shaun 11-10-2005 mother to two beautiful babies TreVaun Charles 3-14-2006 and Keighlauna Monet 9-18-2007 |

by diane08502 on Sep. 5, 2008 at 11:44 PMMy daughter is almost 5, she was first able to get a flu vaccine when she was turning one, I had a flu vaccine in September, and she was born in November, so her first years antibodies were from me! My son is 2.5 and he has had the flu vaccine also, for the past two years. I have checked with my pediatrician, he uses the attenuated version, thimerosol free, and its the one for Pediatric use. Not all practioners use the pediatric one, that is something worth asking your doctor about. Diane dianelanglamorticella@yahoo.com

by BLNG2UNCLSM4EVR on Sep. 5, 2008 at 11:44 PMSorry i don't know. All I know is that it is incubated in eggs and I am deathly allergic and do not know if my kids are yet so we are not getting it. We got the flu this past winter and it wasn't as bad as they made it sound on tv. We had fevers, threw up, were achy and tired but got over it. DD was only 1 yr, and DS was only 3. I gave them plenty of fluids and jello, etc..., and tylonol for all of us. To me it would have been riskier to get the shot, and they are too little to tell me if they 'feel funny' or hurt from allergies. (DS is autistic and cannot talk) |

by gracie23 on Sep. 5, 2008 at 11:44 PMi don't give my kids any shots at all. the flu shot to be specific...is not a sure thing. they give the shot with the strain of flu in it that is mostly going around....but there are many strains that ur child could get and if he happens to get the strain of flu that is actually in the shot he had it might help him....but most likely cuz of odds and chances he will get a different strain therefore making the shot he got...completely unnecessary. it's like giving ur child tylenol all the time so he won't ever feel pain...that's crazy...drs tell u not to do that...but then y do they want to shoot kids up with all these unnecessary shots....my kids don't get shots and they have been fine....the risks are far bigger with shots than the benefits are. hope i don't sound too pushy...please don't take offense....i just have strong feelings on this subject...if u couldn't tell :) :) :) |

by iamhis0 on Sep. 5, 2008 at 11:45 PMNope. My kids don't get any vaccines at all, but if they were to, Flu would be the very last one I would ever consider. It is not very effective and it is basically a gamble. They guess which strain in going to be out that year, and then release the vaccination for that strain. So, if they guess wrong, there really was no point. I personally would rather keep my children's immune systems healthy and strong, and then risk dealing with the flu, than inject them with, in my opinion, questionable and unnecessary chemicals. by ajswenson on Sep. 5, 2008 at 11:48 PMI have never gotten a flu shot, but my husband does. We asked our ped about it for our son originally, and he acutally did not recommend it UNLESS he was in a day care setting. I am a SAHM so that isn't the case. However, this year he is in pre-school and I am considering it. My MIL works at some of our local hospitals and they are making it MANDATORY for all employees - but that's obivously b/c they are in the middle of it all. So in the end...I don't know!! lol |
