The CafeMom Newcomers Club
I live in a wealthier part of town with my parents while I finish my college degree and get money saved up b/c it's definitely a better situation to be in to have money saved up to fall back on having my son before I go out on my own. Anyway....
I run to target to pick up a pack of generic diapers ($5.79 a pk) some babyfood for daycare this next week ($8.00), and I only buy organic food for my son. And they also had some shirts for $1.48 a piece so I grab 4 of them next sizes up to save for him.
I get in line and a woman in high heels scoffs at me as she looks at my order and notices I pull out an EBT card and I ignore her. I'm 23, I go to school 30-40 hrs a week, I work 30 hrs a wk, my son sees more of his daycare providers and his grandma than me most days...I pay taxes, I work hard and I ONLY use my EBT for food for my son. That's it. EVER. I am NOT on medicaid for me, I declined it and I PAY for my OWN health insurance through work that is rather crappy, but it is something.
Well she finally taps me on the shoulder after a moment and says "I think its pathetic that people like you waste taxpayers money of welfare. Your buying clothes, expensive babyfood in your nice outfit and so many other people out there are struggling without help."
I was so shocked that SHE had the audacity to say something to me it took me a minute to respond. I finally replied with this..."Ma'am. I go to school full time, I work fulltime, I buy my son organic babyfood b/c I believe it will make him healthier and live longer. I don't use food stamps on me ever. My 'nice clothes', my entire out fit costs $30 and that INCLUDES my undergarments. And those clothes...are $1.48 a piece to help stock up out of season." And turned around...
SHE CONTINUES..."Well its pathetic for you to even be on, I bet you use taxpaid health care, and I bet you use taxpaid daycare and I bet you go waste money on stupid stuff when so many other people out here struggle everyday."
FINALLY the CASHER (a guy in his 20's) goes "Lady did you not hear her? She WORKS every day. She's going to school so she won't NEED welfare one day. I'll bet her entire order isn't 1/4 of your order. MIND YOUR OWN DAMN BUSINESS."
This Target as a security guard (they had an incident a few weeks ago with a domestic violence thing...anywho) he comes over and goes "what's going on?" and the lady starts in again to the SG...who replies "Lady, keep your ignorant opinions to yourself or get out of our store. Nobody wants to hear you harass this poor girl who's doing the best she can to survive. You need to apologize to her or leave."
She shoved her cart INTO ME and stormed out of the store.
Some girl about my age asked her on her way out..."How much are your shoes?" and she replied "My husband bought them in NY for me, I think he paid $300 for them, they're Prada..." and the girl replied "you obviously don't understand what its like to struggle. So yes, keep your ignorant opinions to yourself." And walked away.
I was one, touched that so many people stood up for me, two, so dumbfounded that someone had just disrespected me and three, pissed off that I was too shocked to say anything

The day they gave me you is the day they took a star from the sky and put it in my arms. I love you Cael. You're the very reason my heart beats everyday.

by mrsgibbs on Sep. 6, 2008 at 9:11 PMi think you're gonna have a problem w/ this...your 1st sentence says you live in a wealthy part of town....then you talkin about an ebt card...lol.. but the chick was wrong for lookin down on your financial business. 1st of all, why is she all up in your wallet anyhow? and then you didn't even have to explain your situation to her! you should have just said mind your business if you don't have any thing nice to say. bottom line..some ppl just need to be ignored and prayed for...they have no place in judging you or your situation b/c i'm sure when she poops her bathroom is funky just like anyone else's! |
