Just curious what you all think.  There has been a lot of talk about Palin and I am curious if you ladies think that a mom with a career means that she chooses her career over her family.

Please explain your choice, if you would like.

I have a career; however, I take time for my family.  Their needs come first!  I only have my career so that I can support my family.  I do travel with my job but not a whole lot.  I take my 5 year old to school everyday and I am home every night to cook dinner.  I tuck both my kids in at night.  Some nights, I have had to bring work home with me but only did it after the kids go to bed.  I have my career to support and provide to my family the things that they need and occasionally want.  I don't see how that makes me any less of a mom than someone that is able to stay home with their children.

I think it depends.  For her I would say YES because that is a very demanding job and she will have very little to NO time for her family.  I work full time but only because I have to BUT I am home every evening and weekend with my kids.  I drop them off and pick them up!  If she could do that then No she wouldn't be putting her career before her family but we all know that as the VP of the USA that isn't possible.

my family always comes first, but I do like having a career and wouldn't want to give that up, you have to have some kind of independence...

Very well said.  I would assume that most working moms would feel the same way.  Thanks for posting that!!

How about a *depends* vote?  I work full time as an attorney, but I've structured my career to work around my son.  I work for government, so get most holidays off.  I also don't have to worry about billable hours, which would mean around 80 hour workweeks in private practice.  I have a 9-5 job, and when I have extra work, I can do it at home after he goes to sleep.   I don't do litigation, so if my son is sick, I get to stay home with him any time I want.

To me, this is about making a balanced life.  If I were single, I could make twice as much.   But this is the life I've chosen and what I think is best for my son and family.

I don't get how some women can work 80 hour weeks with kids unless they have to for financial reasons.   I don't know how they build and maintain a relationship with their kids.  But I'm also fully aware SAHMs probably wonder the same about me.

I don't think a mom with a career chooses the career over family.

I have never put my career before my family. And honestly, neither has my DH. We both have highly demanding careers, we both travel in and out of country for our jobs. However, we both took 3 months maternity leave together,  any thing from health to school that involves my son both my DH and I are both there.  Neither one of us have ever missed a school event, a dr's appointment, a special occasion. Nothing.

We are fortunate enough to be high enough up in our mutual firms that we can take off work whenever we choose. Without having to worry about any financial repercussions. I know that many do not have that luxory. But this little thing has made it easier for me to always put my family first.

I know many think that someone like me who travels for work, is more apt to become disconnected from family. But I don't see that as true.  I was away from home just a few days ago, I spoke to my DH 5 times and my son 4 times. Just that one night. Many families who are with one another nearly 24/7 do not communicate that much.. Anyone can balance career and family, if they want to.. It's all in the wanting to and what you are willing to give up to be able to.

Not always but some do... especially those with "higher up" positions (as in higher level positions) IMO

I just want to know how a mom having a carreer is bad?? If we are working doesnt that mean we are supporting our family?? In some repects choosing a career is choosing your family.

I have always disliked the "Moms Should Stay At Home" streotype!! Everybody is diffrent, and as human beings we should have a choice!!

I personally could not, and I thank got for my current education, and the fact that I will be successful in a couple of years!!
