I was really hoping this is one thing Emma wouldn't do! I did it, til I was like 6!!!! And my parents had such a time to get me to stop!!! And it sooo messed my 2 front teeth up!
She's 4 months old and found her thumbs and they are ALWAYS in her mouth now! Even in between feeding her, when I go to burp her, the thumb goes right in every time!
Did any of your children suck their thumbs, and til how old??? I know she's still little but was just inquiring! Thanks!----O, when I try and give her her paci now, she sucks it for a sec then takes it out and inserts the thumb!

by lrj42685 on Oct. 7, 2008 at 6:21 PMI am not saying you were an emotionally disturbed child so please dont get offended. Many children who dont voluntarily give up thumb sucking usually have an attachment issue and possibly should have been urged to transfer it to a lanket stuffed animal and so on most do this naturally this is why you dont see a majority of children doing it at 6. Fetus suck their thumbs in utero... it is silly to try to stop infants from thumb sucking and you can try but you may just end up reinforcing a behavior you may see fade in the first year any how. My dd sucked her thumb when she first "found" it then lost interest she is 7months now and doesnt at all... we also dont use pacifiers |

by okrasin on Oct. 7, 2008 at 6:23 PMboth of my girls suck their thumbs. My oldest is now 9 and I think she quit a yr or so ago. It was only when she was tired though. Her teeth are fine and her dentist was never worried about them either. My youngest daughter is 6 and she sucks hers when she sleeps sometimes. Not very often either. I have never made a big deal out of it. Her teeth also are fine and the dentist isn't concerned. They say the only time the mess up the teeth is if they are forceful suckers. :) Neither of my sons sucked their thumbs. My girls tried to get my youngest son to suck his, and he wanted nothing to do with it. |

by mom3plus314 on Oct. 7, 2008 at 6:23 PMI am very sad to admit this but my dd is 6 and hasn't topped yet. Her dr told me he did it until he was in the 7th grade and doesn't see anything wrong with it but I get so embarrased out in public and her older 31 yr old sister hates it b/c then her dd wants to do it and she broke her. So far so good no bad teeth but if she comes up with bad teeth we'll deal with it. Not much help for u I know sorry :(

by mrsjmomma on Oct. 7, 2008 at 6:24 PMdd will be 2 in december and she started out putting other fingers in her mouth..then she found her thumb. We tried a pacifier too but she would just put them in at the same time! I feel like her one tooth is getting messed up but I took her to the Dentist (for something else) and he said its fine not to try to take it out of her mouth. He said after 3 or so they will start to address it. |
