I do not mean to offend when I ask this question, but when they say people who are bipolar have "racing thoughts", what is that exactly?

Are they bad thoughts?

Not necissarily. Just alot of thoughts running through their heads....ideas, emotions, situations, memories......

My Dh and DS are both diagnosed bipolar.....it can be a very confusing disorder, even to the person who has it....

Racing thoughts means what it sounds like, thoughts going really really fast. Not necessarily bad thoughts. It's more like, thinking about the laundry, the news, you husband, what you ate for breakfst, that time that girl said the meant hing to you at work, the dishes, you gotta call your mom etc. all at one time.

Its basically when a thought comes into your head and you physically cannot get it out. No matter how hard you try it won't go away. Just over and over you have this thought in your head.

I suffer from bipolar and am waiting to get on meds-- the racing thoughts are the worst. Sometimes the slightest thing sets me off and BAM! there I am just with this stupid shit in my head.

: Racing thoughts are not just "thinking fast." They are thoughts that just won't be quiet; they can be in the background of other thoughts or take over a person's consciousness; they can gallop around in the sufferer's head like a carousel gone out of control.

Before knowing anything about bipolar disorder, I called this sensation "racy brain." Thoughts and music would be zooming through my head so fast that sometimes I wanted to scream. If it was going on at bedtime, it could take me an hour or more of concentrating on word games to get myself to sleep.

Components of racing thoughts can include music, snatches of conversation from movies or television or books, one's own voice or other voices repeating a phrase or sentences again and again, or even rhythms of pressure without any "sound" in the thought.

The phenomenon called racing thoughts is distinct from "hearing voices," which is a symptom of schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, severe mania or other psychotic disorders. Racing thoughts can be a symptom of mania, hypomania or a mixed episode, but unlike some other symptoms of these moods, they can also occur with depression or an anxiety disorder. Sometimes racing thoughts are accompanied by a pounding heart or pounding pulses, including drumming in the ears.

The best way I described it to everyone was, It's like a hundred people all whispering in your ear at one time. You can't focus on any of them and it's very overwhelming. (not to imply that I hear voices, I'm using it as an example. haha! Just to clarify)

Thats exactly what it is. Sometimes I just want to yell- STOP TALKING DAMMIT!! It is the most frustrating thing I've encountered in my life.

No I know what you mean, it's like I can hear everything at once but nothing at the same time. The phone is ringing, the radio is on, I'm trying to focus on something etc. and my brain can't pick a focus.
