I'm the assistant manager at family dollar, and one of my employees happened to tell my boyfriend that every now and than she likes to smoke a little weed. I don't know if I should tell our manager, or anywho, suggest a random drug test, or what I should do. It sounds very simple, it's my job, so I report her. Right? Well, she's also my friend. She has a daughter, and is the sole income at the place she's staying at. Besides that, it's almost Christmas.

This isn't the first incident that I've susspected something of the sort at the store. I found a little baggy in the back room with some white power stuff in it. I ignored it figuring it could have been any one, customer included.

I just don't know what to do.

i would talk to her personally, tell her you know, that she may NOT smoke on the job or before she comes in. if she starts acting "messed up" at work, or if she seems to not be able to competantly do her job, then report her. I personally know a lot of people that smoke weed and can function completely fine. So i think if she is a good employee, and not messing things up at work, you should just give her a fair warning.

I dont do drugs, but if i suspected someone doing it on the work place. Then i would say something to someone...but if they are just doing it on their own time, than that is their business ya know? Maybe talk to your friend, ask her if she is doing it during work hours or her lunch break, and ask her not too do it while she is on shift?

That's just it, she's one of the worst employees there. She's costantly making up excuses to not do things she doesn't want to do. She useless most of week, out side of two days. Than she works her tail off.

I agree, I used to be an assistant manager, what we used to tell our employees is that we suspect drug use in the workplace, we will be doing random drug testing (never did just scared them lol) and if anyone seems high while at work they will be fired immediatly.  We used to do it at a meeting so as to not single anyone out.  Good luck!

There is a HUGE difference in someone smoking a little weed once in awhile and her doing coke and bringing it to work with her!  (IF it was hers you found).  IMO you should have addressed the issue with the coke, not just about something she said about smoking weed!  Unless she is coming to work very obviously stoned I think you should leave it alone.  Personally drug testing for a job like the one you are describing is, IMO, a JOKE!

I didn't address nothing to no-one about the little baggy because, like I said, it could have been anyones. People use our bathroom often (even without consent) and it would have been extremely wrong of me to bring it to her attention, and assume it was her only because I hadn't a clue whos it was.

I'm curious as to ehy you think drug testing at my type of job is a joke.

IMO I think drug testing should be limited to heavy drugs only....not weed....and in occupations such as scientists, doctors, bus drivers, and the like....NOTHING AGAINST YOU OR YOUR JOB....JMO....

would the family dollar even do drug testing? i'm not trying to be snotty...i'm truely just curious. I worked at McDonalds as an overnight lead and I've reported people for smoking pot on the job but they would talk to them and of course they'd so "no we didn't" and they just let it slide...they wouldn't give a rats ass (pardon the language) about testing because they'd lose 80% of the crew...and I'm not exagerting sadly. Three people did get fired though because they were caught red handed smoking in the supply shed outside....idiots.

Please feel free to leave me a cookie or present! I will return the favor promise promise! holding ornaments

I think what I would do is hold a drug policy training for ALL the employees so she isn't just being singled out. Let them know that there may be random drug tests and that if you pop then you can be fired...That way it's put out to EVERYONE.

Holding a job in general is enough of a reason to get drug tested. And weed is still an illegal in most of the US unless things have changed. *shrugs* And in some cases weed can lead to those harder, heavier drugs.
