My boyfriend and i just moved to a small town to be closer to his family. Right now we have no money, no jobs, and no place to live so we are staying with his aunt and uncle for now. They have 6 kids and my boyfriends mother also lives there so there is a total of 11 people living in a 3 bedroom apartment. They're not rich people but they have money so we're good with food and everything. My boyfriend just got hired today for a job as a cook and we applied for an apartment and are just waiting... His family feeds us because we have absolutely no money yet. We applied for food stamps and everything was going great. Now they're telling us we dont qualify because we dont purchase and prepare our food seperate. If we had the money to purchase and prepare our own food why would we be applying for food stamps? They told us to try the food bank! Now as i walk out of the office i see a big sign that says "We're here to help" but im thinking if i was homeless with no job i would get food stamps easy, but if im temporarily staying with family who feeds me because they care about me i dont qualify? To me thats not right

try again in like a month or so and when it says do you share or eat with these people check "NO" say you buy and make your own food... but don't have a lot to do so with (which is true)

my advice is to reapply and answer that you buy and prepare your food seperate, b/c as of right now, they think that you are applying for everyone in the house, I have food stamps and have had them for a little over a year, and had a similiar incident happen to me, you have to word things a certain way to get any help...best of luck to you and your family!

Just reapply saying you don't share food

The food stamps should be for you, your boyfriend, and your child...not the whole household.  I live in a basement apartment.  There are a total of 8 people that live here, but only 4 are in my family.  We purchase and prepare our food seperately, so the income and everything is only based on our family.

I was going to just re apply but this is the kind of small town where everybody knows everybody and the people in the public assistance office know the family im staying with. I only put my boyfriend and i on the application but since we all eat together we have to go by everybodys income. I just feel so bad because they have to prepare meals for 11 people and i have no money so theres nothing i can do to help
