Dumb question: Can you take a sewing machine on a airplane?

If we pack a sewing machine (not on the carry on, but on the bags to check) is this allowed?
MIL has a manual sewing machine. She is in her 60's, has arthritis and can't really do that anymore, we want to bring her an electric one.
Is that allowed or will it be confiscated by customs?

Call the airlines and check, you should be able to. We send boxes to my MIL by boat, we can get  a big box sent for $150.  I have sent a sewing machine and no problems with customs. I think they xray it.

I doubt it would as a carry on, personally I wouldn't risk the embarassment. The freekin airlines treat you like a num-nutt when you don't know if someone thing is a allowed to be a carry on or not. I would just check it with the regular luggage, and disclose that it is a sewing machine at check in
