We have two son's ages 3 and 15 months. We have a cat but she it terrified of them. Dog's require too much maintance right now. And the fish die too easily on us. I was thinking about a gerbil or hamster. Do they bite often? Are they hard to maintain? Expensive? Do they need to be vaccinated or spayed? I was thinking about a pet for them because soon my Dh will join the Army and I wanted them to have something to comfort them.
Beta fish, they last forever, even if you dont' feed them or clean their bowl, you don't have to worry about some big tank with a filter and crap. no walking, no litter boxes or cages, no messes on the carpet and when they die you distract, flush and buy a new one before they even notice.

Well, I wouldnt reccomend a hamster. No they dont need to be vaccinated or anything like that, you just have to pay for wood chips, cages, food, and accessories. BUT I did have some hamsters growing up, I think I was like 11 or 12? The first one died unexpectedly. I was heartbroken, so I got another. And that one my cat ended up almost eating and he died too. And they chew on their cages and get out a lot. And kind of smell. I did have a guinea pig for about 7 years, he was a great pet. But he was also smelly. Guinea pigs normally only live for about 4 years, and I was horribly depressed when he died. He was such a great pet.
Anyways, I dont think rodents make such great pets. Maybe a lizard or dog or fish or something would be better. Or another cat that wouldnt be so afraid of them.

I forgot to mention, we have had a terrible time with godfish and plattys and crap like that, but my betta I feed like once/week and clean his bowl like once every few months and I just refill the bowl when the water gets low, I have had him for over a year. Every now and again he looks like he is going to go belly up on me but he turns around. Gerbils and hampsters don't live long, the kids get attatched then 2 years later "croak" and yes they are kinda a pain in the ass, some bite some don't that's a toss up.

My son would try to take the fish out of the tank to pet it. I didn't know that about rodents so maybe we will skip out on those.....I'm thinking a kitten. Hmmmmm.
