I do not want to do this. I can't see putting my son threw that amount of pain in the first days of his life. However, I am the only one who feels this way. I've tried everything to convince my husband that we shouldn't do it. Everyone on both sides thinks it should be done because is it "cleaner". I've explained it in detail to my hubby and even had him watch videos. But I am so alone on this decision. Hubby is circ'd so he says his boys will be too. I am not due til February but I already want to cry about it. I mean I feel my son moving around all day and it is awesome. I mean how am I supposed to just let some random doctor (since we are military) take him, without either parent and cut him. I know I am going to be an emotional mess when it happens and I wish I could make my family, especially my husband see that we don't need to do this. Everyone keeps saying that it should be my husbands decision but this is my son too. Ugh. I want to cry just writing this. If anyone can give me more ideas to change his mind please let me know.

I know these types of posts tend to turn into drama but please don't! I really do want ideas. If you circ'd, good for you, it is a personal decision. If you didn't, why didn't you and are you happy with your decision.

Well, I believe I have come to a decision that I am happy with. You ladies, both for and against, actually helped quiet a bit. I'm not going to say which way I am going but thank you all!

  • Sorry, I side with your husband. Circumcision has proven benefits AND THERE ARE PAIN MEDICINES ADMINISTER LOCALLY!!!!! You just have to ask or use a dr that will use the local pain meds. There is a cream applied to the penis, and a shot for pain for infants being circumcised. Your son will not be crying bloody murder under a knife in pain THAT IS BARBARIC and NO ONE DOES THAT ANYMORE!

  • I'm really sorry, Mama.  I'm SO glad my hubby decided to go along with what I thought best.  I'd have been devastated if he wanted to do that to our sons.  I just gave him tons of information to read.  He was for circ'ing at first, just because he is.  But he's also a reasonable kind of guy who likes to make an informed decision.  After reading, he agreed that leaving things as nature intended was best.  There's a great group on here called raising intact boys, if you need more info for hubby, go there.  I also came across a site a while back that was written by a circumcised man who wished he hadn't been and was going through the process of "re-growing" the foreskin...interesting article, I'll see if I can find you that.

Missi....loving wife to Jason, mommy to Ricky (1-12-05), and soon to be mommy to Logan Douglas (due Feb 2010).  I'm a cloth diapering, baby wearing, breastfeeding till baby wants to quit, homeschooling, non-circumcising, anti-cry it out, part time working, animal loving, trashy romance novel reading, farm raised hillbilly.  I have had Meningitis and Swine Flu and lived to tell about it.  Any questions?

  • My two boys are circumcised and I was present during their circumcisions- it was NOTHING like those videos. Be VERY careful with what you watch. Most of the circumcision videos available online are promoted by anti-circumcision groups and cannot be trusted as reflecting the reality of the procedure.

My personal suggestion? Do a little research, but again being VERY careful not to fall for anything too overly anti or pro-circumcision. You want facts and reality, not personal opinion and emotional outbursts. You could join the circumcision debate group right here at Cafemom (http://www.cafemom.com/group/14865) where you could see both sides of the issue and learn more about the facts. And you could also join the circumcision support group to meet other moms that have been through it and learn their experiences to see if your fears are justified or unfounded.

I was going to mention that. You need to find info that isn't bias to one side or another. It's kinda hard, but it;s out there.

  • You are allowed to go with him when he is circ'd. Your husband is too. I'm military as well and I had the choice of whether or not I wanted to accompany him. I didn't but he slept through the whole thing. He was sleep when they took him and sleep when they brought him back. I'm sorry you feel that way but look at it this way. You get to decide a lot more about the baby than your DH does and him being in the military you also gets to be with the baby more than he does. So just give him that. I promise the baby won't be in that much pain. The first time he pees will be the worse of it. Just keep it cleaned with peroxide or the alcohol swabs they give you. The lil ring pops right off when he's completely healed. Both of you will be fine. GL. Sorry I have know advice for changing you DH's mind though.

Uh, you're wrong.  Our doctor doesn't use any type of numbing cream or shot.  Needless to say, my son is intact.

OP-for every piece of evidence/research we found in favor of circumcision, we found something to refute it.  When it came down to it, it was for cosmetic reasons we would have been doing it and I (like you) couldn't bear to put my son through that for cosmetic reasons.  Especially with  the risk of them cutting off too much or not enough and having to get it done again and the risk of infection...nope, couldn't do it.

Holy crap! Bad day much?? There is so no need to "yell" at me. I am aware there are pain meds and I know they are not going to go in there and just start chopping away. Geez, I haven't even looked at youtube. I have an appt on the 9th and I plan on asking about the meds but if the hospital doesn't do it I can't just go to another one. Like I said in the post, we are military so we have one hospital we can go to.

This wasn't really a post about circumcision as much as it was a post about how I personally feel about it and about not being supported by anyone.

Thank you for your input though.

  • I am glad that I left my son alone.  Have never had a problem with it.  Good luck with what you choose. I feel really great about my choice, he is as he was made to be :)

  • I really don't know what to say mama :( My husband was circumcised but our son is not. I gave DH the info that I had done and asked him to do his own and let me know what he thought. Luckily he came to the same decision as myself. What's interesting is DH's father is not circ'd. The only reason DH is circ'd is because my MIL didn't know she had a choice. It was just something that was done. DS's pedi was actually very supportive of our decision not to circ. I don't know if you have found a pedi or have one but find out if they are supportive of not circing. If so maybe invite DH along to interviewing the pedi and ask about circing.
