What do you think of this video from American Idol winner Fantasia Barrino "Baby Mama"
Although I hate the term baby mama I think the message is good.
To be honest I stopped listening to it as "Were the backbone of the hood" came on. Sorry, I HATE the term "Baby Mama", and I think it glorifies women who get pregnant with no intention of being in a relationship with the "baby daddy". I know that not ALL single mothers are like that, a lot never intended on being in that situation, but where I live you see it way too much to where the BM could care less about the relationship her child has with the father, only about the check in the mail.
I liked the song when it came out 2-3 years ago but yeah i don't like the term babymama
I like it. Its basically saying keep your head up and know that even if you're doing it alone you're still doing it and thats what matters. As far as being the backbone of the hood it depends on how you look at it. Alot of young people make it out the hood and they know they have their mothers to thank for that. Who else can they credit for the fact that they are not just another statistic? They owe that to the one person who stayed on their ass enough to make them believe that staying in the hood wasnt an option.
How many women really get married with no intention on being with the child's father? I think it's the men who knock women up and abandon them that have no intention on being in her life or their child's life. The least an absentee father can do is provide some financial support.

Who said anything about them being married? If you will re-read what I highlighted, Im talking about women who want to sleep around but have no intention of actually having a relationship, and then get pregnant and only bitch about not getting support. And the LEAST an absentee father can do is be a part of that childs life, not send a check. I dont support songs that glorify men talking crap about their childs mother either. But the song in question is THIS one.
I think the lyrics are uplifting to single moms. I never really liked the phrase "baby mama" cuz I think it's misused (didn't someone call Michelle Obama "baby mama"? It's become a racial thing for some ppl).
But this song isn't glorifying being single - it's just talking about a reality of single mothers who are trying to make it and how they have to struggle to do it. It's like, "Keep strong because we women, we single moms can do it!!" when she says "backbone of the hood" I believe she means the single moms are holding together their families and trying their best to raise their children for better days - all women are the backbone of society if you ask me, and these are moms trying twice as hard to do what we all do everday, and be the backbone of their community and families. She also mentions the "support check in the mail" not like single moms are sitting on their butt waiting on support (which definitely isn't enough to make ends meet!!) It's more like these moms are working hard and get the check in the mail & it's like that disbelief that the dad contributes so little to the lives of the children in comparison with all the women give not just financially, but emotionally, spiritually, etc.
So yeah it's a good message... if u can get beyond the preconceived notions of "baby mamas" to what she's really trying to say :)
