First off this is not a PA bashing post.  I tried to take my very sick 15 month old and my 5 year old to the doctor yesterday.  They told me they wouldn't see them because their insurance had been cancelled.  No one notified me of this.  So I called my hubby's union to find out what happened and they said because of his lay off for 7 months, now that he is back to work he didn't have enough hours in his bank for this quarter's insurance.  So now my 5 kids are uninsured until February.  Because we are working middle class we don't qualify for help with insurance.   So I pay enough in taxes to pay for other people's kids to have insurance, but I can't afford to insure my own kids.  This just isn't fair.  Working middle class kid's parents can't afford to send them to preschool, or college, or afford to pay for sports and they make too much to have someone else pay for all of this stuff.  So in the long run they are the ones that are screwed.

I  took my baby that the doctor refused to see to the ER last night and she was admitted to the hospital.  Now the doctor has to see her.  I can't wait to tell her how I feel.  We are facing a very large hospital bill now.

  • You op, make a very valid and frustrating point! So many families, like my own for example, also fall into this too much to help, but not enough to make it category! I also had a sick kid last week, and since we can't afford health insurance period I pay up front- usually using the money we need for food or bills:(

  • My stste is the same way. It's called All Kids and no matter your income bracket (if you do not qualify for medicaid) your child can get insured. Of course there is a co-pay but it runs from 10 dollars- 50 dollars. Look into it.

    Quoting Kayla516:

I don't know where you live but here in Pennsylvania EVERY child can get government insurance. No matter how much you make, they cannot turn your child down. You may have to pay a little bit. My cousin's husband makes very very good money but his insurance at his job is crap so they called and got their kids covered for $10 a month and there's 3 of them.

  •  OK, in my state we have a program like CHIP but you're kid has to be WITHOUT health insurance for 90 DAYS before they will take him! My son is a case that CAN NOT go without insurance! He has too many meds, appointments, and tests! In my opinion, that is some messed up crap! We 100% qualify for him to be on this program and it is better coverage for him than what we can afford (and we would pay a monthly premium for this insurance) but he can't get on b/c he has to inruance-less for 3 months! WTF!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

  •  I wanted to add that the only way I found this out was my hubby was switching jobs and his new jobs insurance wouldn't start for 30 days so we needed to get my son something for those 30 days but COBRA was going to cost us $1500 just for the one month and there is no way in hell we could afford that and then we found out we qualify for this state insurance but he can't get it cuz he had insurance with in the last 90 days! SO we had to go 30 days praying and hoping every day he didn't get sick or something happened and he would have to go to the doctor or ER. We didn't leave our house!

  • I was talking about saving for college. Not the cost of dance class.

    Quoting KairisMama:

Here's what I want to know... Where is there a dance class as cheap as $25/week? The park district here charges over $200/month. That's the park district!!! :) :)

I was wondering this too. I consider myself middle class, but I do not have money issues.

    Quoting BethPrice1345:

But my questions is...What do you think is middle class? And if you're middle class why can't you afford the things like dance, theatre, sports, college? Did you know if you put only $25 a week into a savings account gaining NO interest that you will have $23,400 in 18 years and when you add in some interest or put that into CD's, etc, it will really add up. If you're middle class then why can't you afford $25/wk or dance class, etc. Are you spending your money in the wrong places or is your standard of middle class different than mine?

I mean no disrespect at all...I just am trying to learn your definition of "middle class".

  • Yeah, I think the definition of "middle class" is different for each person. I think middle class means you pay your bills on time and in full, able to put some $ up, able to go on vacation, shopping within reason, etc without worrying. But to some I guess it means they have a job and are able to live month to month or something. I don't think there is a clear definition.

To OP: I'm sorry your child is sick! I hope you LO gets to feeling better soon. What did the Dr. say when they saw you LO?

I didn't have money iussues.  My bills are paid, my kids provided for, but we are recovering from a 8 month lay off.  IT takes time to regroup after that.  I also can't afford $1500 a month in health insurance premiums.  I DO consider myselft middle income.  I am not on assistance of any kind and don't require any, accept possible help paying for my daughters hospital stay.  Middle class is very broad.  To me, there is upper middle class, middle middle class, and lower middle class.  Ranging from people who make enough to get by without assistance to people that are just below wealthy.  I am sure that those that say that they have no money issuses are also not concerned with insurance premiums at this time.
