Ok, i'm 17 weeks prego with my first. I don't have A THING yet...and i'm wondering from some other mamas that have 'been there' on when I should start getting things, and what I need that just might not pop into my mind until I DO need it because people are going to start asking me I'm sure right after I find out the sex of the baby! And when can the baby really start hearing and reacting to your voice through reading or music? I just want to be prepared!!!

  • Congrats on baby!! Honestly the one thing we LOVED was the wipes warmer. It keeps the wipes nice and warm and its a miracle at night when you have to change baby. Helps keep baby sleepy for easier going back to sleep. Also its amazing how many of the little blankets you go through and socks. Also those little battery operated tap lights. You can stick them anywhere and they put off a soft glow and are perfect for night time changing without blinding baby with harsh bright lights.

Some things that were HUGE wastes of money for us were the diaper Genie, the teddy bear that sounds like a womb (terrified both my boys) and I know tons of women swear by them but the Dr. Brown baby bottles.

  • I would say get a swing and a bouncer for sure. They are great when you need a hand. Also get besides newborn clothes get 3-6 months. Never know how fast they grow. Also, what I found that works when they get cheesy neck stuff, baby powder works great at keeping the neck dry. (from spit-up) If you plan on bfing, make sure you have a pump. You never know if you'll need it for times away from baby or engorging.Hope some of this helps.

  • Hey Hun! How are things going? Good I hope!

Your due in late march early April right?

Some things you will really need are

diapers, wipes, butt cream, baby soap, diaper sacks, bibs ( or a wash rag tucked under the chin) baby nail clippers, a booger sucker,

Baby socks, at least 3 packs. Babies tend to kick when you change them and my kids ALWAYS stuck their socks in their poo. We changed socks 3-4 times a day. Plus baby socks tend to disappear.

Light weight footed sleepers are good BUT baby night gowns last longer. It takes longer for them to be out grown. ( get heavy ones if it will still be cold there. I am in TX so it is pretty warm by early April)

Onesies are GREAT. If it is warm then a onesie is the perfect outfit for staying cool. If it is cold then a onesie under their outfit will keep them warmer.

A car seat cover if you a going to have an infant carrier. It will keep the wind off of the baby AND keep people from touching him/her.

5 or 6 Crib sheets and blankets. My boys spit up and leaked at night. Having several extra sheets and blankets was nice, it kept me from having to do wash every day.

A diaper genie OR trash can with lid. Diapers start to smell fast and you don't want to have to go to the dumpster 10 times a day.

Something that did not occur to me til I had my second son was to keep a small stack of wash rags with the diaper changing things. Boys like to "spray" as soon as you take their diapers off.

We had a wipes warmer but IMO it was a waste of money. So were the cute baby shoes that my kids NEVER kept on. Try not to go over board with outfits, my kids outgrew most of their outfits before they got to wear them. Hand towels work great as burp rags.

Um.... thats all I can think of right now!

Oh baby caps! They help keep baby warm, and mittens to keep them from scratching.

  • The amount of clothes you will need depends on how often you will be able to or want to do wash.

You can make it 3 or 4 outfits BUT will have to do wash more often. Same thing with sheets, blankets, socks, bibs etc.

But keep in mind that babies grow FAST the first few months. IMO a max of 12 outfits would be ideal. Enough that you won't have to do wash every day but not so much that the baby will out grow them before wearing them.

baby shampoo, baby powder/diaper rash cream.

hooded towels, plenty of onesies and socks.

    sheets and blankets.

a swing is always good to have.

  • Oh I forgot SOCKS! I swear they disapear! And the little mittens for their hands so they don't scratch themselves.  I used a clean dish towel for bibs they worked just as well.

  • Get stuff as soon as you can.  You never know, you might go into labor early.  (Like I did.)  Also, have your baby shower early.  You may not get all the stuff that you need.  I got all fun stuff, and nothing that I really needed.  You need all the basics of course.  Crib, diapers, etc.  If you have a boy, (that you plan to get circumcised) you'll need Infant Tylenol and Vaseline on hand.  Burp rags are a must!  This will take care of anything that comes out of the baby's mouth.  Spit up, drool.  A lot of people don't recommend using blankets due to SIDS, so I've always used a sleep sack or wearable blanket.  If you plan to breastfeed you'll need a pump.  Also something to store the pumped milk in:  bottles, plastic bags.  Some bags even work in the freezer.  If you are going to use formula, don't stock up!  The formula you buy might not agree with your baby, and you might have to switch.  They make little containers for formula though that are awesome!  It's a little travel container that holds 3 bottle worth or so...for the diaper bag.  Stroller!  Check it out thoroughly.  These things are heavy!  Make sure it's light, and easy to fold/unfold.  Also make sure it has enough cargo room, and that you can actually get to the basket when your kid's in the stroller.  And a diaper bag with a long or adjustable strap is great because you can hang it over the handle of the stroller.  An adjustable stroller handle is good if someone else, (taller or shorter than you) will also be pushing the stroller.  Sorry about the information over-load.  Hope this helps.
