So ds is 10 months old on Sunday... Yay!  I quit bfing on Friday when we took him to the ER because he wasnt getting any oxygen... His lips and fingernails were blue, and it took HOURS for them to turn pink. But the drs dont know what caused it. So anyway. I wasn't allowed to breastfeed him because they needed him on constant oxygen and since he had a stuffy nose i guess it was hard for him to breathe? IDK. but they wouldn't let me, and by the time we went home, he didn't want to latch.

So we put him on whole milk. NO BASHING. He doesn't do well with formula, he has always throw it up. And this is something he tolerated WELL.

So anyways. He got his flu shot a month ago, got really sick right after with a fever and cough and snotty nose. Everything but the cough and snotty nose went away, but his nose is awful. He wakes up with boogers in his hair!!!! Anyways. For the past 2 days or so, he's been spitting up alot. Not puking, because it isn't a violent type of thing, just spits up wayyyy more than ever. And it smells NASTYYYYY like.... rotten milk... You know?

Anyway. DH says its probably the snot running down his throat... But IDK... Any ideas?

  • Does it look like it has phlegm (that stuff we can cough up) in it?  If so then yes it is probably just running down his throat and he doesn't know to cough it up.

  • you should probably talk to your sons ped. But until then you can pump and give him milk that way. It can take a bit before their bodies decide that it can't handle something. I started dd on milk at 10 months, albeit with formula but I wanted to introduce it. But I don't want you to take offense. Have you tried any of the hypoallergenic formulas?

Phlegm looks like liquid boogers. Like a greenish, sometimes white snot looking stuff. I was told that the majority of spit up is snot. My sons spit up smells the same way. It's very gross.

  • Phlem is usually snot like, green and gooey. by the way milk can aggrivate runny noses and phlemy coughs

  • It sounds like he could be spitting up from the milk, since you say it smells like rotten milk. My youngest son use to spit up his milk too..It look like cottage cheese and stunk,I switched him to 2% and it stopped. Maybe the whole milk is to strong on his tummy still?

Just curious (not bashing,my kids went on milk before 12 months too ) but why did you decide to give him milk instead of pumping breastmilk for him?

But about the runny nose..thats typical in kids his age. Alot of times ear infections come right after the cold so be prepared :) Hope he feels better soon :)

  • Oh I know what you mean. I went through all with my daughter too. It is very possible that its just the snot but if he's had the runny nose this whole time I don't see why it would just start with adding the milk

  • Because i couldn't pump. I tried while he was in the hospital. I pumped every 1.5 hours for 25 minutes, and after 8 hours only had 3 oz. Which wouldn't even last 1 bottle, since he's gettinf 8 oz/bottle. The ONLY time i could pump was when my milk came in. Oh, and when i engorged from his not nursing. But that was it... And there was NOOO way i was going to become engorged just to pump 1 bottles worth everyday. no way jose. lol

yea, his looks like unstirred cottage cheese... yuck.. is 2% bad for him this early? i mean, i thought they had to be on whole milk up to 2 years..i feel bad enough taking him off the nursing, i dont want to cause any problems with the milk, ya know?

  • He could be allergic to the milk, or it could be reflux and the milk is aggravating it and making him spit up more.
The snotty nose would definitely lead me to think its a milk allergy though, if its gotten worse since you started.
