But....didn't our fathers fight so that they could burn the flag???

Ok there is a big debate going on in my family right now. A "cousin" (I say that lightly and no time to get into that) of my husbands decided to hold his own protest and during it he burned a flag. *this is not something tat anyone in my immediate family was part of, we learned of this after the fact*

So now, of course, my husbands family is furious with him.

But....isn't this one of the things our soldiers fight for? Freedom of speech? We don;t have to like what they did...but don't we have to acknowledge it as their right?

  • Ummmm NO

it is against the law to burn the flag, and that goes WAY BEYOND freedom of speech, IMO

    No it's not.

And yes, it's free speech and the proper disposal of a flag, and it's also free speech to say that it's an inconsiderate, disrespectful thing to do.

  • according to DH the BEST way is to burn it, but respectfully...

But really, usually people just take it to the american legion i thought... or post office.

  •  Go ahead and burn the flag. But not in my country that my husband fights for and is living with injuries because he fought for this country. Not in my country that my grandfather fought and died for. Not in my country that my father, maternal grandfather, cousins, BIL's, have fought for.

Until you have the balls to stand up and fight for that flag... you don't have the fucking right to burn it and all it stands for.

That's my opinion and I know you didn't do this. You is used loosely.

  • it's not against the law, but is looked down upon by many.

  • umm...No they didn't fight so that people could burn the flag,...they fought so that people had the rights to express their opinions. To me personally, its an serious OFFENSE for someone to do that...my husband gets up every day and goes to work to defend that flag. To disrespect it, is, IMO, disrespecting him. Its one thing to disagree with the government, but to burn the flag is disgracing our country...two different things.
