i was just wondering about it, my boyfriend just had his gma take him to the ER because he felt the onset of it and didnt want to tell me right away because he didnt want to scare me.  it didnt really because i have no idea besides face paralysis, what it is.  I didnt think he needed to go to the ER because he didnt seem sick, and with my family we never really went to the ER, i mean the most that i have spent in the hospital is when i had my daughter, most ive seen a doc also, and the worst thing we ever went through is a broken leg.  so how seriouse is it really?  I mean he has had it 2 times before this and hes fine, but i havent dealt with it before so anyone know?

My ds got bells palsy when he was a child.  It goes away, but takes time......a couple of months for him.  It's paralysis in the facial nerves.  My son couldn't blink, so they made him wear a patch over that eye.  They don't know the cause yet.   My ds is now 25 and still has a crooked smile from the bells palsy.  Not a serious condition though....(not life threatening or anything like that.)

So, they say it is not hereditary, but My dad had it, my brother had it (when he was 4) and my sister had it, when she was about 12. My grandma (dads mom) and my dad's sister had it too. I always get scared that I will get it too. It does cause face paralysis and it does not always go completely away. My dad's smile is a little crooked and so was my grandma's. It does cause bad headaches and even ear aches. It is all a nerve thing. It can cause the eye to water uncontrollably also.

Quoting zoeybearsmama:

I am not sure all the ways it can be caused. My father had it years ago as an allergic reaction to an antibiotic he was taking. It paralyzed half his vocal chords as well. He was told, as long as he was able to swallow without difficulty, to just wait it out.

I have heard of other people having spells, and then it becoming permanent. Other times people have it from birth due to nerve damage from forceps being used during delivery (Sylvester Stallone).

i had it when i was in high school about 17 i think,i'm 20 now. i had it for about two months. my Dr said it was caused from an inner ear infection OR trauma to the head/face. my brother had nearly KO'ed me in the face with a boxing glove while we were playing around a couple of nights before and then my face started feeling funny but i had no idea what was going on. i could not talk right, drink right, eat, blink. it was pretty sucky.everyone at school thought i was doing it on purpose. lol. i actually took my state id picture that day and it is forever captured in picture form. i tried to smile and i look like two face or something.haha. but even now you can still kind of tell that i had it, when i smile or try to wink you can see what side it used to be on. it cleared up pretty well. =) and it doesnt hurt[except to talk haha] and all it is, is nerves in the face being paralyzed.

Isn't this sort of like having a stroke? It can leave facial muscles damaged.

My dad had that many years ago.The whole left side of his face was paralyzed. His eye was stuck open and he couldn't move the left side of his mouth or face.He couldn't drink with out a straw and my mom had to put eye drops in his eye all the time. That way he wouldn't go blind. My dad talked odd for a while and it took him a little bit to get his movement back on his face and his speech back. His face "froze" on the left side when he was sleeping,he sleeps with his eyes open most of the time, and that is how he woke up in the morning too.It took him a month or so to get back movement too.
