Ok really, seriously...we have a 7 month old BABY...who had been acting crankier than usual today, woke up from her nap at 5 BURNING up, temp of 101.0 ok....so I am like I will play it safe and take her to the ER because obviously pedi is closed and if they catch it in time they can treat it...like what is it? The first 72 hours of flu symptoms?
So anyway, the dr is really nice, and this nurse I guess I am not sure who she was really...but I know she worked there, was talking to us, and she was like, not to be rude, but really this isn't the place to bring her, the peditrician is best, everyone whose worked here has had it.
Ok lady, really my baby hasnt gotten the vax yet and she is ONLY 7 months old...wth did you want us to do?! Id feel horrible if something happend to her and we just brushed it off...like really! And its not like they were even busy, we were the ONLY people there...so what ever!!! UGH!!! Its not been a good night.
Well, first of all, they have posted all over the place here that if you think you have H1N1, that you should NOT come into the doctor's office, so I'm confused why everyone runs there first. Anyhow. Okay, your baby has something. Why do you automatically assume it's H1N1?? My daughter's had fevers before, and I call the nurse line usually. Unless the temp is like 103 degrees, they told me not to go to the ER. Unless there are some other serious symptoms, it's not worth it. (Yes, even at 7 months) Fever is just the body fighting off infection. I guess I don't consider a 101 degree fever BURNING up. I wouldn't freak out unless it starts getting up to 103, or there are other serious symptoms, which you didn't mention any besides crankiness. Well, aren't you kind of cranky when you don't feel good?
BTW, my daughter hasn't had the vax yet either, nor will she be getting it.
It's scary to see your 7 month old sick. I'm sorry they treated you so poorly. I hope your little one is feeling better real soon.
I used to worry with my first one as well but after having two more I usually wait until the fever is 104 or higher. My youngest used to get uti's and her temp would be more than 105 sometimes 106. Thankfully she never had a seizure (seizures usually happen when the temp rises really fast). There is nothing wrong with waiting out the fever as it breaks unless there are other symptoms.
Hope your baby feels better soon.
Oh yeah, my middle one just had a 24 hour bug where vomiting and diarrhea were involved. Talk about worrying about the h1n1 virus.
very good advice....I work at a hospital, and the amt of people running in here, with these vague symptoms, all b/c of h1n1 hysteria..is unbelievable. First of all..worst place to be...and also, these symptoms are so mild, any other time people wouldn't dream of coming to the ER for them...but suddenly, b/c the news media has created this frenzy, people are flocking in. People should just use their USUAL judgement...nothing has changed.

Actually she is right.
There are so many germs that you are exposed to in a ER; that its just not wise to take them there..and as long as they are responding to fever reducers and not having any difficulty breathing they do not have to be seen even; in fact most doctors are not prescribing anything for it anymore.
I doubt hardly she was rude; she was just making talk and obviously you took her to be rude because you didn't like what she had to say.
MOST people who go to the ER when they are sick; shouldn't even be there. Unless you are having any complications mentioned above is when you should go.
I'm sorry your LO is sick. I hope she feels better soon.

Thanks! I can imagine working at a hospital right now HAS to be frustrating. I had most of the symptoms of H1N1, except the fever. I stayed my happy ass home, lol. I've been sick for almost 2 weeks, but I know it's not the swine flu (which I'm not even worried about). It sucks, but it happens. It's that time of year. Plus I work in a busy retail chain...duh, I know I'm going to get sick. Handling money does that to you. They say cold can't get you sick, but sometimes, I swear it does, lol. I hate winter....*sigh*

Ok mama, so not bashing or judging here, you did what you felt was right, and that's all that matters! Yeah don't take her to the ped... the peds around here don't want em in w/even a runny nose... we can't go atm b/c my daughter is teething and gets a runny nose every time!
If you get a temp of 103, go to the ER, otherwise it could be anything! A fever just means there is some time of infection in the body, and a fever is telling you it's fighting it. The way I look at it, the higher the fever the harder the body is trying to fight it off (or the infection is worse). She could be teething, she could have any number of things. My daughter had a temp of 101 for about 24 hours. I gave her tylenol and motrin, rotated. I don't give her full doses unless I have to b/c of her weight (she's very small for her age) and she never usually has to have a full dose for it to help... If she has other flu symptoms, not enough wet diapers, won't drink/eat, diahrrea, puking take her to the ER, even if the temp is below 103. Diahrrea could also come w/a temp while teething, just fyi...
Don't just assume it's H1N1, that will bring more panic on you and stress and your baby needs you to stay calm :) Just take it easy and watch her, w/any temp... it could be a number of things. As far as the vax goes, the closest place that's even gotten em is an hour away, and we're not expected to get any for a couple months anyways... doesn't matter to me b/c nobody in our family is gettng it. I'm afraid if we get it my 3 mo old son w/end up w/SF and I'm not taking that chance.
As always, practice "washing off" as I tell my daughter. Wash your hands regularly, sanitize door knobs and such, as wella s your shopping cart!! Keeping yourself clean will reduce the risk of getting it, and if you know someone who even has a cough just stay away from them, or stay at home if ya'll feel sick... if everyone would fallow this it wouldn't be spreading! :) Good luck mama, I hope she gets better soon, let her rest lots, it will help!

Oh gosh I know how that goes!! (the money thing). Money is one of the dirtiest things on earth!! Use hand sanitizer lots!! I had people bash me for that when I worked at a gas station, I was like umm that dude was just hackin up somethin right out the door, and you don't want me to clean my hands??! WTH! People are crazyy!
