KIds being left behind

Okay so I was just wondering if there are any moms who live in an area now where a child has been left on the bus.  I have read of at least four in the last week week.  It is really suprising to read the driver/assistant whom ever found "Johnny" after going back in to start the afternoon route and had failed to check the bus when they parked it in the morning.  All of the cases say the children fell asleep and were left on the bus after it was parked.  This just makes me seriously question public transportation and I have worked in a public school for the past ten years.

How is this possible?  One case even said the mother had been to the school to drop off paper work and the school didn't even ask or tell her that her child was absent that day.

I appologize I dont have the links to the stories.

My dad drives bus for one of the highschools & the grade schools ... he said he doesnt get how it happens (unless they do it differently) ... he said he'll drop off his last load of kids , pull up (so another bus can come) , park and walk up and down the asiles ... than goes home ... hell he finds a bookbag , or purse or something , and takes it back in the school ... he says in their handbook it says to inspect the bus when u get to the terminal , but he does it at the school just incase a kid forgot something they need in the day , ya kno?

I was when I was a kid. My bus driver always forgot I was there, I was so quiet. She used to drive by my house all the time!

That happens with my dd even when I'm standing at the end of the driveway, the other kids on the bus let the driver know she forget to drop off my dd!

When I rode the bus in high school the driver would turn off the bus then an alarm would go off so she had to walk to the back of the bus and push the button to turn it off.  That way she would have to notice if there were any kids left over...

I plan on driving my son to and from school tho... hopefully that plan will be able to go thru when he's old enough

this used to happen to me, too!

i don't understand how bus drivers leave kids either. my sm was a bus driver and she always checked the seats for forgotten stuff and sleeping kids. my aunt one time, though was so "in the zone" that she IGNORED the kids yelling that she had skipped a stop! she was suspended for that (she didn't know there was an actual camera on her bus).

my bus driver would walk down the isle before his last stop to make sure he didn't forget anyone. I can't see how you could forget especially when carrying little kids..I'm so scared to even let my son start school because of things like this that you hear on the news

I am with you on that fear.  One of the kids left behind was a nonverbal autistic boy so that would be my worst nightmare as his mother to know he was not accounted for and potentially missing.  You would not even know where to begin looking.

So when does the driver need to be held accountable?  After a child is harmed or dies?  What if they died from heat exhaustion after being left on the bus all day.  It's the same or similar to a parent who leaves there child in the car all day and they die.  It's hard to imagine it but obviously it is easy to do since it keeps happening.
