For those of you who are or know someone that working in the medical field or field of psychology......
I have a question. I noticed that when it comes time for people to graduate from medical school or what have you... Some seem to stress about where they are going to end up. I remember a friend of my older cousin, when she graduated from med school about 8 years ago, She was stressing about not knowing if she was going to stay in Texas or if they were going to send her to another state. I have noticed that some psychologist that have just graduated are from a different state. They could have chosen to move here of course. I am wondering... When you graduate... Does the schools have a say in where you do your internships? Do you have to do intern? I am really curious about this because I am planning on getting a PhD in Psychology. Hopefully I can get started as soon as I finish school. I just want to get an idea of what I am going to put my self through.

My brother's fiance graduated from nursing school in December. She wasn't placed, she actually had to apply to hospitals. She applied with the hospital she completed her schooling with and got a position right away. She's a nurse in the unit of infectious diseases. That wasn't her pick, but that is where they placed her.
Kairi is 3!
Ok... So you dont necessarily have to get placed in another state our county. I was wondering because I would hate to have to leave too far from home so I kinda got a little worried.. Thanks

Quoting judybant:You apply to internships all over the country, and hope one where you want to live, accepts you into their program. Not all hospitals and clinics are teaching hospitals and clinics, so they don't take interns...

Glad you got your answer. Hopefully I'll be able to get my internship without having to go across the country. My best advice is keep good grades, have great recommendations and do some documented volunteer work. Good Luck!
How it worked for my dad (he's a psychologist) is there are several places that offer internships. Based on the field you want to go in, there may be around 1/2 dozen of them that will be interested in you and will interview you. They tend to be all over the country. Usually one will feel you are the best fit and will except you as their intern. My father graduated in ND, and did his intern in MO. He decided to stay there and is a forensic psychologist for the mental hospital he did his internship at.
