Try the safety door knob cover.

Raise it up just hight enough that he cant get under it.

We have the baby gates that mount into the wall, we figured we could always putty them later. Does he start to play?

Ours was really tall, I just moved it up a little so he couldn't climb it.

the baby gate situation, I dont know. Dont they make extra tall ones? And for doors, get those doorknob thingys. They fit loosely around the handles and can be opened by applying pressure in just the right spots- but difficult for children to figure out.

Just keep telling him it is time for bed and put him back. It is a tedius thing but eventually he will get it.

My kids can push down the baby gate and do so when they want....But they found out the hard way that pushing down the gate when they are suppose to be sleeping is a big no-no.  You need to have a talk with him, and let him know that if he doesn't go to sleep and keeps pushing down the gate, he's gonna get in trouble.
