Yesterday my MIL called to tell DH that his neice (she's 17) was in the hospital because she hurt her back pretty badly. Today she called to tell us they did an x-ray of her back and they found a tumor on her hip. They did a CT scan today after they found the tumor to see if the tumor was in her hip bone...and found: 2 tumors in each lung, 3 tumors on her spine, a tumor or her left hip (they organically only saw the one tumor on her right hip) and 2 tumors in her legs...She did have ANY symptoms of this...she just went into the hospital because she hurt her back...this was a complete and total shock.

I just lost my father to a rare type of follicular lymphoma (a blood cancer) on 8/8/08....so this is all, so surreal to me. They're doing a biopsy tomorrow on her bone marrow to check and see if the tumors are cancerous or not...so please, just keep us in your thoughts.

We're worried that it is cancerous because my MIL's had tumors in her colon, my DH's sister has leukemia (not his nieces mom, DH has two sisters), and DH's grandmother died from leukemia in 2005.

Edit: Well, today MIL went down to FL and they called us after they got the bone marrow biopsy...there is cancer everywhere. Her shoulders, back, spine, hips, femer...there's nothing that they can do. They don't know what type of cancer it is yet (two different types they are thinking) and they did a test and will know the results Monday. The only thing they can do is agressive chemotherapy, but the outcome does not look good.

Thank you for all of your kind thoughts and words. DH doesn't really know what to say or act like, MIL is a mess and SIL is just....so upset. After the test results come back Monday, we're going to see if SIL and her kids (she has two other kids and Katie, the one with cancer) are going to come up to NC to stay at the hospital here....

Another update...MIL just called and told us what the doctors said what the cancer could be. They think it's either Ewings Sarcoma or Rhabd Omyosarcoma. Neither of which are good. I looked them both up....and the latter seems to be less life threatening...Ewings only has a 5 year survival rate with localized tumors...and hers is everywhere. Rhabd seems to be  treated with chemo and has a better survival rate. The doctor also said he has no problems with sending her (via flight) to NC to be with us. On Monday they'll decide whether or not they're coming up here or staying down there.

Edit again: I just called MIL to see how they were all doing. On Monday they're doing another bone marrow biopsy (I found out today that they put Katie to sleep for the first one and will be doing it for the second one...bone marrow biopsies are SO painful!), putting a port in and telling her which cancer it is. Tuesday or Wednesday is when they will begin chemotherapy. I also talked to Katie on the phone and told her I loved her, was thinking about her, and hope she's doing okay. MIL told me that when she's not in pain (they've been giving her pain pills and pain meds through her IV) she's her 'old-Katie self' so that's nice to hear. She sounded so much older on the phone...she sounded hopefull and confident. It was awkward, I didn't know what to say...but I'm glad I got to speak to her.

MIL called yesterday and told us the prognosis. She has Ewings Sarcoma. They're starting chemo today and she has to stay in the hospital 5x a week every two weeks for chemotherapy...so pretty much, every other week, she'll be in the hospital doing chemotherapy. And the doctor said that she has only a 10-15% chance of surviving the first round of chemo. So, it's just....all messed up. I just wanted to keep you guys up to date. Sorry I haven't updated in a while.

OMG!! I'm so sorry. My mom's cousin had 4 tumors in his spine and he went to the dr. b/c he fell and couldn't feel his legs, they were cancerous but after surgery, chemotherapy and physical therapy he's doing good and hopefully will walk again. All this in 3-4 months.

I know how hopeless one can feel but I also strongly believe in the power of prayers.

You and your family will be in my prayers.

Thanks guys, I really appreciate it. I just really feel for my husband's sister....she used to be addicted to drugs and my MIL is worried that if something happens to Katie (DH's niece...well, she's my niece too by marriage I guess) that Michelle (DH's sister) will resort to drugs again.

This whole situation is just so screwed up. I'm trying to stay on the bright side and assume they're not cancerous and maybe that's why there were no other symptoms...but who knows. I'll update more when we know more.
