Going from owning to renting sux

So we are selling our house in Arkansas and moving to Wisconsin (where I am originally from). Anyway we will be renting for the first year because we dont want to buy in a small town that we aren't sure we are going to like.

Well we are having a helluva time finding a rental (ahem...a rental HOUSE) that will allow us to keep our dogs. We have a lab and a chihuahua. They are both completely house broke and not destructive.

Anyway I just had to vent and say that I am not looking forward to renting, and having to live within someone else's rules and regulations. Sigh.

I have never owned a home.  We've been renting since me and dh have been together.. and i hate it. There is nothing more i want then to buy our first home.. we're getting there little by little.  GL on your search!

I totally agree with you!  We are selling our home in WI and moving to CO.  We are renting until we figure out where we want to live and until our house here sells...and the idea of moving back into a rental is less than thrilling.  We are renting an apartment...which is okay, just not what I ever imagined we would go back to!

Good luck with your move :)

Where is your house that you are selling? Maybe you should just rent it to us and solve the problem! LOL

Well wouldn't that be handy!

At least we have the rental in CO lined up...so that is one less thing to worry about.  But man it is hard to figure this all out long distance!  At least you have lived in WI before...and kind of know what to expect!

(we are in Madison by the way)

Well I will tell you what. Our house is also for sale right now. If your house is still for sale when our house sells we will talk about a possible rental if yall are interested.

That sounds like a plan.

this whole "pack house, sell house, move crap cross country, unpack stuff" really sucks,  I would love a transporter beam or something to just move it all "as is" :)

I hear ya.  We're in the process of moving back to Ca.  while he works I have to clean, pack and sell the house - as well as do some upgrades to get it to sell faster in a shitty market, get two kids through the rest of the school year and work as his admin putting together his reports, spreadsheets and timecards.  He's an independent contractor so we can do that.

All the same I'm not looking to give up my perfect kitchen, a neighborhood where I win, a town where we're established and a school that I've been on PTA for the last 4 years at to go rent a house - even though it's not a small town or unfamiliar.  I HATE renting, and love having my own home to do whatever I want with.

I have friends who've rented properties before, and I've gotta say.  If you can't deal with someone not maintaining the place like you would, and treating it like well, a rental... don't rent it.  Even though the other poster I'm sure would be a great tenant, what about the people who come after?

We thought about it, but I was like no way.  To come back and see stains on the carpets that you didn't make, to find out someone was a smoker and didn't tell you or to come back and have the place smell like a litterbox would break my heart.  I have to cut ties with the place when it is the dream first home it has been to me.  To see someone disrespect it because they don't have any long term investment in it would kill me.
