I dont know how other ladies do it? I don't do CIO but how do you sleep your baby? Do you just put him in the crib they play for a while and fall asleep what do you ladies do? My ds he's 7 months during the day he gets fussy when he's sleepy & I carry him and he falls asleep then i put him in the swing asleep or on my bed i dont have a mattressfor the crib yet. should i get a play pen where he can take naps during the day??
with my first, i would do a feed, play, sleep routine. i would feed her, play with her, and then lay her down to sleep at appx the same time everyday...for naps and bedtime. i never had to do CIO until she was about 18 months old, but thats a different story.
with my second dd, i have her sleep with us because we only have a two bedroom house and I don't want to interrupt my toddler's sleep. so we don't have any routine or anything like that...she eats when she's hungry and sleeps when she's tired.
so sorry, i guess i'm not much help.

you don't have to do CIO method, but honestly what you are doing creates a bad habit because that's all he's gonna want...getting carried and motion when he sleeps. What you can do is, sooth him a few minutes before nap time, put some soothing music, close the curtains and stay with him next to his crib/play pen til he goes to sleep. Eventually he will learn to sooth himself to sleep otherwise it will be a nightmare for you to be able to get him to sleep.
You aren't necessarily creating a problem. I had to wear my baby to sleep until she was around 1 year old. I would wrap her on and walk and walk until she fell asleep. As soon as she was asleep, I would very carefully unwrap her and lay her down without waking her. I had to put her in the middle of my bed because I couldn't lay her down in her crib without waking her. I just put pillows around the edges of the bed and let her sleep.
Soon after her 1st birthday, she started consistently going to sleep by herself after the bedtime routine. She had been doing it before, but not consistently. Ever since, she's a wonderful sleeper, especially for naps (she actually tells us that she needs to go to bed and leads the way).
I think that each child has his own rhythm and they will eventually all reach sleep maturity. I just don't believe in pushing them before they are ready and I feel that my kids prove that you don't have to.
As far as the crib, why don't you get a mattress for the crib if you're going to go to the trouble of getting a playpen? I think it helps a lot for sleep training if they have a regular, familiar place to do it.
i have a stubborn 7 month old and he has to be rocked to sleep but he also thinks he gets to decide when its bed time, and we are trying to break him of it but no luck yet.
what we do is we give him a bath with bedtime products then put music on while w have lavender scentsy burning and give him a bottle and rock him to sleep if we are lucky hell drink his bottle in his crib and fall asleep. lately with his teething tho there has been lots of screaming and crying.

i've been doing this for 3 days and it's been working great. I think eventually he'll start to fall asleep on his own. I'm going to get a mattress for the crib when my dh comes home from work next month
I created a monster with my DD and continue the tradition with my son...we do bath and story and i rock them to bed ...*shrugs* they will only be little once

that's true LOL. I did this with my ds who is now 4 but it was so hard when he was a baby though cause I got him used to the rocking chair I couldn't even get up from the chair until I did CIO one day and that was the end of it.
When i got pregnant with my son in November, i started the CIO and putting her in a big girl bed, and it only took a couple of nights and she was ok...now she just wants to rock for a little bit, then looks at me and says 'i go to sleep in Jades bed' LOL!

I would buy the mattress. My dds mattress cost me $50, her playpen cost $85. Also the play pens are uncomfortable. When she was little I never used it, and now when I have to I do, but I put a big blanket in it. No bashing she is 2.5, and is capable of sleeping on top of a blanket. lol
