My son will be 10 months on Monday and he has started trying to purge himself.  He is sticking his fingers down his throat after eating...

Is this normal?  Am I doing something wrong?  Why is he doing this?

All of my kids did it at one time or other.  You just keep taking their hands out of their mouths and redirect them.  He has just learned something new!

Well is he really doing it on purpose? I mean my kids would always play around in their mouth and occationally gag, but I wouldnt think a 10 month old would intentionally do something like that.

DD started doing this around 18 months or so. They are just experimenting. I wouldn't freak out...

Normal and it drove me crazy. My DD learned how funny it was to gag yourself while mommy is driving to freak her out. The less of a big deal you make about it, the sooner it will go away.

He looks at me and smiles after I take his hand out of his mouth and does it again and then does a fakey cough and does it again...

Sounds like triggering his gag reflex is just another skill. Just give him something else to do till he stops trying it.

Exactly what she said. The less you react to it the sooner it will stop. If your LO isn't getting a reaction from it, it won't be fun. If you se him doing it just take his hand away and say NO. That is it. If he keeps doing it, repeat the NO and try to distract him.
