In 2007, a week after my wedding, my cousin was murdered. She was shot at point blank range outside her home for refusing to abort the baby she was 20 weeks pregnant with. The father of the child first tried to kick her in the stomach and when he didn't get the instant miscarriage he was hoping for he called his brother who unloaded a gun into her neck and head. He has never shown remorse, even in the interview following her arrest he asked the cop to confirm she was dead and when he found out she was he said good. She left behind a 2 year old son. This was SO hard for me, we were close like sisters, i found out i was pregnant 2 months later and realized that our children would never get to grow up together like we did.
Fast forward to this past week...The trial. We found out horrible things about the crime but we also found out that he has a son who was 2 months old when he was arrested. They arrested his brother for accessory to murder yesterday in court. Yesterday, he was given life for 1st degree pre-meditated murder. My family was all rejoicing the "we won" I bursted out. "No one won! We lost her and now his son lost a father, and his parents lost a son and now they have to go fight for the life of their other child!" The pain on his parents face was unbearable for me.
Too often we forget that their family loses too. My only brother is in prison for 35 years and we miss him every holiday, i missed him at my wedding, i missed him at the birth of my son. He was my big brother, i worshipped him!
So i am just writing this because i thought i would feel better once i realized that he was found guilty and punished accordingly, but i don't. Because in reality we all lost something and this was a tragic situation that turned out to be devestating in so many ways. Just thought i would share.

You are absolutely right. And i am sooo sorry you are going through this. You and your family and their families as well. It is a horrible shame :(

Thank You. I just though i should share because too often we don't think of what the criminals family is going through. Yes he did a horrible thing and deserves the sentence he was given, but that wont make it any easier on his parents come next week when both their children are missing from the Thanksgiving table
