A girl in my other group posted this last night -
Is all human life TRULY equal ?
Before answering please consider the following scenerio -
If a train continues on its current course, it will kill a five year old child down the track. However, a signalman is standing by a switch that can redirect the train to another branch. Unfortunately, a lone worker age 80 will be killed if the train is switched to the new track.
If you were the signalman, what would you do?

well along these lines.. I want to ask about something I read. If all life is equal ..WHY would a mother "Thank God" that her child wasn't mentally impaired ?? Wouldn't that child'svalue be exactly the same ? what the heck would be the difference? Okay I know this is going to piss people off. But let me just say that I don't have any real opinion on raising a child with severe mental impairments , I do have a child with severe adhd and a couple other issues and although I love her very , very much I do think her life will be harder and that's not equal.
The group I call home is 2gether 4change !! The group I "Play" in is TAA ..I hope to see you there !!!
I am an atheist and I believe all life has equal value. That doesn't mean someone may not have a harder time during their life, it just means no one person's life is worth more than the next.

One is always pointing out the bad things that the other is doing in hopes that I don't notice all the bullshit he is trying to get away with...
I'm not fooled by my own kids and I'm not fooled by Politicians.
I'm not sure I understand your question.
As far as the train scenerio goes, I would save the 5 year old, not because I think his life is more valuable, but because he hasn't even had a chance to live yet.

course he's had a "Chance" to live. How did he end up on RR Tracks? Maybe it's gods will?
I have heard this story, only different. It was the worker's 5y son that got stuck in the gears so he either had to kill his son or a train filled with passengers. It is supposed to "symbolize" God giving his son Jesus to die for our sins.
In the scenario that you have listed, I would choose the 5y, because he has not had the 80 years to live as the other man has. I am sure that the 80y man would be okay with that decision.

He's had only 5 short years to live, the other has had 80. Maybe it was God's will to place ME at the control because he knew what choice I would make.

I saw that video, too. It was heartbreaking. That's a whole different choice to make. Kill one to save a hundred? It would be a hard decision if my own child. I honestly don't know what I'd do..

Oh, I BAWLED when I watched it, seeing it made it feel so real! I have heard that story ever since I was little. I remember my preacher telling that story for Easter. I thought it was sad. I thought about my Daddy having to make that choice. And I was only 6-7y!
I cannot honestly say that I could make that decision (in the video). If I did choose the passengers, I would probably jump in front of the train when it was done.

As equal as life is, when death will take someone, sometimes you have to make the best choice. We've argued the abortion topic and I still stand that an unborn child deserves all the same protection as a born child but if mom is GOING to die, then sometimes it is better to save mom and loose the child then to loose both (pre-20ish weeks of course). The scene you give above, save the child. It is a sad situation to think of but a 5 year old has much more life then an 80 year old left to live (baring any unforeseen circumstances).
I of course love God with all of my heart.
I agree. I don't know that I could sacrifice my child's life. I guess that should make the point of just how much God loves us and wants to be with us. We might not be able to, but God did.
