i'm a single mom and have been living with my mom but i'm getting a new apt soon and my mom said i should get a gun cuz i will be by myself all the time my kids are 2yr and 4yr i dont know if its a good idea i do not like guns had a bad experience with them when i was little but her point was what if someone broke in my apt how would i protect myself and my kids with them being so young which is a good point but i'm not sure and would like other moms opinions on this
p.s. and i would keep it locked up and everything so the kids couldn't get ahold of it if i decided to get one
Do you think that if someone broke in you would be able to unlock, load and shoot the gun in time?
If not then there is probably no reason to have it in your house.

I don't like guns. I would get a dog or something else.
If you would feel uncomfortable owning one you either shouldn't get one or take proper courses to learn how to use one to become comfortable.

If you are trained or are willing to go to the range and become proficient with the weapon, I'm all for having one, but if you're just going to buy it, put it in a locked box for just in case then no. It's too dangerous. I don't agree with having weapons in your home unless you can fire them and handle them safely. All that aside, I think your mom has a good point. If you don't want a gun though, a taser is a good option as well. Just have to get a little closer to the intruder. My husband is away this year and I have 2 loaded guns in a locked gun safe that sits beside my bed. We also have 4 other assault rifles that I know how to use very well. If I didn't feel comfortable firing them, I would at the very least have a tazer and pepper spray. It's good to have something to protect yourself when you are the only adult. That is my opinion.
I think you should get a gun if you want one. For women it is said that a shotgun is easiest to use in case of protection. I have a lot of guns around my house (hubby just got out of the military, is now a cop, and is a hunter), they are all locked, except for one I keep up in my room at night by my bed. My child is only 6 months old so I dont have to worry about her getting to it yet. I feel a lot safer at night because my husband is gone every night until 7am working graves. I would hate the thought of someone breaking into my house while only my child and I are home, and having nothing to protect us. Just make sure if you do get one, you take a course, or have someone who is knowledgable teach you how to use it and take care of it.
Would I get a gun? Absolutely.
Should YOU get a gun? Probably not. If you aren't confortable with the idea of it, and don't have the training to use and store one safely; then don't get one.

No. I live in apartment alone with my almost 3 year old son. I'm not too fond of guns so it was out of the question for me. I did however put a chain lock on my door from the inside so now it has two locks instead of one. Iunno that alone made me feel a tad bit safer. I still sometimes hear noises when i'm alone at night with Naeem but I doubt i'll ever get a gun. I've heard of too many sad stories on the news of children getting a hold of guns and things happening. GL :)

that is big reason why i dont want one

My take on it is this....if you aren't 100% sure that you can use it effectively, all you are doing by having it is goving the bad guy the ability to get it from you and use it against you. If you are going to own a gun, you need to know how to handle it and you have to be sure that you can use it if need be.
We have a gun, it's locked up in a gun safe. I know for a fact that I could get it out quickly and use it if I needed to. If I had a single doubt in my mind and thought that someone might be able to get it from me and use it on me, I would never unlock it.
Sounds to me like a tazer might be a better option for you, or a can of mace or pepper spray.
