I definately would not get them for a 2 year old. Target has these dolls called Generation girls or something that look almost exactly like the American Girl dolls and they are only like $25. I'd get her that instead.

I got my first American girl doll when I was about 8 and boy did I love her. I still have her. She was my favorite. We got my SIL one when she was about 12. I would say about 5-6 is the earliest just because they are so expensive. She would love one now but I would find it hard to get her one. There are other options out there for her. maybe a cabbage patch kid?

Get her the bitty baby one. It will last, and if it does get some damage, you can send it out to be repaired for a small fee. Plus they are what $40, not bad.

I would hold off on the traditional AG dolls till she's 5/6 though OR proves she can be responsible with it. I still have my Samantha doll from when I was little, and my DD will get it eventually (along with her own). Of course, buying them is also partially self-indulging lol.

Barnes and Nobles carries the paperback books and the little dolls 18 inch dolls.  We bought a doll and two books for my youngest daughter to hopefully get her into reading.  I never had one as a little girl, but always wanted one.
