I figure this is a big enough group that someone would have to have an answer, so here it goes:
My son is almost 7 weeks old and we've had to switch his formula, I'd say about 4 times now. He seemed content on Soy, but was still a little fussy. The doctor said to try a different one and if it didn't work we'd go back to Soy. So it's Goodstart Protection Plus. He spits it up alot more than the soy. He seems a bit fussier, a little content at times, but he will stay up longer crying now.
We're wondering if he could be lactose intolerant. He was born on time, btw. We would call his doctor, but obviously it's the weekend, so we have to wait until Monday.
My question to you all is this:
Can an infant be lactose intolerant and how could you tell?
Also, a follow-up to that, my fiance's mom heard that a pregnant mom who drinks alot of milk can cause her baby to be lactose intolerant. Anyone else heard this? I'm feeling a bit guilty if that's the case because I really loved milk when I was preggo with him. I had other drinks of course, but at least 2 glasses a day would be a good guess on how much I had.
thanks for reading this, info would be appreciated. Advice too, so that I could run it by the doc next time we go.
Yes an infant can be lactose intolerant, not sure how they test for it in infants. As for you causing it by drinking a lot of milk during pregnancy is highly unlikely, if you craved it then you probably needed it.
Quoting ymom3:
My ds had to be on soy if I gave him the regular kind he would vomit!!
Yeah, I'm thinking he just can't digest the regular stuff because it's just rough on him. My fiance is the one who mentioned LI and I'm feeling horribly guilty about it. Plus...I don't like Goodstart, their version of Gentle Plus had him up for hours crying all night. We only use Goodstart because WIC won't cover anything else.
I have two boys and both of them were lactose intolerant. My oldest grew out of it by the time he was 2. I was lactose when I was PG with them Couldn't touch the stuff but I can now. Being Lactose intolerant is genetic. as Far as still being fussy on it if he's 7 weeks old and you've been changing his formula a lot he proably just needs time to udjust give him some peppermint he might also have reflux.
all the switching could be messing him up....but, enfamil makes a lactofree formula you could try. that might be the way to go. dd was on it because i was thinking the same thing when she was having a hard time. once she got to be a little bit older, i went back to the regular formula. now she drinks loctose free whole milk.
my daughter is lactose intolerant and we had the SAME problem with formula but plus gas. OH my gosh it was bad. my heart goes out to you lol. they told us infants can be lactose intolerant but when they are that young its not about the lactose its about the protiens. We found that the alumentium formula by similac (purple can) worked best. she went throught 5 kinds of formula before that one and it worked!!!...try it (it is expensive...$27 a can for powder... but well worth it). They say that a baby should grow out of spitting up milk and having gas from the formula by age 1 and if not then chances are they are lactose intolerant...which was my case. But no i never heard anything about the milk during pregnancy bc i am diabetic and didnt drink milk when pg so.....idk. Hope it helped!
I know that they can have milk allergies, but that can not be caused from you drinking milk during pregnancy. Honestly that sounds like an old-wives tale. Both of my kids were allergic to most formulas. They had to be put on a certain formula and all of the fussiness was gone within about a week. We found out the hard way by finding blood in their diapers. Unfortunately, thats really the only way to tell for sure. You can also try Gripe Water. Sometimes the fussiness is related to gas or colic. Gripe Water definitely helps if that is the case. Its all natural too and doctor recommended. Hope this helps!
