Hand me down etiquette??

A couple of questions...

1st) what am I supposed to do with stuff I got as a hand me down? Like I got a swing and I'm done with it (not real fond of it, will buy a new one for new baby)....do I give it back or pass it on or can I sell it?

2nd) How do you turn down offers of hand me downs? I'd rather buy my kids new stuff out of my own pocket (yes, I'm weird like that) People are so sweet and keep offering their kids old clothes, and I can't keep changing the subject!!!

Thanks

Well, IDK how to do what you want, because i never had an issue with handme downs.

I guess you can just say "oh thanks so much, but we have so much already!" or something along those lines. Just be gracious they offer, and chances are they wont be offended.

Now, with the swing, IDK what you can do, since you accepted it already.... You could always pretend someone BOUGHT you the new swing. Someone they dont know, LOL

and perhaps offer it back? But ME, id probably pass it on to someone else in need

donate the swing, about the not wanting hand me downs. just accept it and donate it. you may not want it but there are people out there that need it

With the swing i would ask the person who gave it to you if they would like it back and if not give it to someone else. Whe someone offers me hand me downs if i don't want them i will tell them that i really dont need anyomore clothes.. If they are very persistant i will take it but get rid of it, either give it to a friend who needs it or the slavation army.

I always accept the hand me downs, keep a few, and when everything is outgrown (or the stuff I didnt want) I pass it on to someone else with the promise that they will pass it on when they are through.  Kinda a pay it forward thing.

1) ask them if they'd like it back. If not do whatever you want with it. It's yours.

2) I don't mind some hand me downs, but others I do. I usually ask if they want them back first. If they do, then I usually will tell them that my son has reflux so I don't want to ruin their clothes. I only take hand me downs that they don't want back. So, if I ruin it, no hurt feelings. If they don't want them back, and I'm not interested I generally will say.you are so sweet to offer but, we've got so many clothes as it is now, maybe you could pass them on to someone who truly  needs them.

Just give the swing to a family in need. And when people offer you hand me downs just say "thank you but my kids already have alot,i'd rather those go to someone who really needs it"

Just dont be like "o no thanks" cause it may come off rude..like your too good for there kids stuff or something.

I feel kind of weird asking her if she wants the swing back since we didn't really stay in contact (nothing bad happened, just busy with our kids and what not) I DID use it, my son is now 6 months old (and I'm preggo again, so new swing for new baby) I guess I can just pass it on (I sell all my old baby stuff at consignment shops, that's why I asking if that was in bad taste)

Good ideas on the hand me downs! I just try to use the excuse that I love shopping for my boys, but one lady won't back off! I know she's just being nice, but I'd rather she give them to someone who needs it.

Ive never gotten any hand me downs that where other then clothes but I guess I would ask them if they wanted it back when we were done.

As far as clothes you can always say that you have more then enough clothes tell them that they should find someone who really needs to since you do not.

good advice.  Accept the offers and take what you want and pass on the rest.
