High Risk Pregnancy Spinoff...if you are or were high risk don't miss this!!!
So the question of why there are so many high risk pregnancies got me to thinking...
The Op asked why people thought there were so many 'high risk" pregnancies these days
and one of the first responders answered that docs have much more to go on now and are more careful to diagnose and watch high risk women.
So it brought me back to my own high risk pregnancy and how scary it was because the lack of info out there and even with all the support groups of today and the internet there was little to no info for me, we were flying blind on hope.
Please use this post to leave a response about your high risk pregnancy. Those of us that have been there or are there right now may just find that one person who knows what they are going through right now and can maybe give you a little relief!
I will post first and I hope many of you momma's share your story too!

I was born with a broken heart...
...and I survived it!
My first pregnancy was really bad I guess it was concidered high risk. Premature Reputure of the Membranes (15 1/2 weeks gest ) I have written several journals about it.
I was born with a complex Congenital Heart Defect known as Transposition on the Great Arteries and had corrective surgery in 1981 at the age of 1 1/2. Because most babies died prior to the late 70's from heart defects because surgery there are few women who have reached the age to reproduce. Also due to the lack of research and awareness of adult congenital heart defect patients there was no standard of success rate with pregnancy.
So at 22 when I was delighted to find out I was pregnant I was horrified to hear my cardiologist and OBGYN agree that I should medically abort. I can give more details to anyone interested but after 3 specialist I finally found a new doc to guide me through my pregnancy. The outlook was grim and they expected the worst.
I am pleased to say not only am I still healthy but so is my beautiful daughter!
Like I said there is so much more to my story and if anyone needs or wants to know more just ask, but for now I will leave the floor open for the rest of you to share!

I had HELLP syndrome and surprisngly there isnt very much info out there in docs offices or books, well you can find books but even in what to expect I dont think it even mentions it. (not sure) I had hellp syndrome with my twins which caused me to deliver at 29 weeks. I had steriod shots the week prior, I guess my doc read the symptoms ut didnt tell me, all I kenw when I went in for my 28 week and 4 day appt (I had weekly appts) he walked in and asked me if I was ready to go on a helicopter ride. I was so shocked when the urses were getting me ready with a cathedor and magnesium (yuck) I couldnt even give the urse my units information to let them know. I gave them some off the wall companys name. the guy looked at me like I was uts, hubby called my plt sgt for me. (we were in the smae compant after all) SO I get to the city they monitor me for two days, then on the third day the nurse comes in and take my bf tray away and says the doc will be in shortly. he waslked in five minutes later and said they are taking me down for a c section immeditaely ad that I had HELLP syndrome and that they couldnt wait. It was so scary!

I'm high risk. My story is long and scary...and I'm now pregnant w/my 5th baby....3rd since I was told I was high risk. My perinatologist (high risk ob) went so far as to say she had never had a scarier patient and didn't want to see me back again as a pregnant mama. This was after she delivered my first pregnancy w/her at 31 weeks and I nearly died and spent 4 days on life support. She then tied my tubes, cut them and burned them, after I had another pregnancy with her...that was 15 months ago. Guess what--I'm now almost 12 weeks pregnant again. :D
OMG I had an experimental surgery in 1981 at the age of 1 month--and was told I'd never live past my first bday, I'd be sickly, never have kids, etc. I'm on my FIFTH pregnancy and have only had to have 1 more open heart surgery since then!! Crazy huh? My doctors think that I may have made history b/c of EVERYTHING that's happened AND my heart defect, etc.

Thank you for this....My DS was born at 26 weeks, I was not high risk and had no complications. With this pregnancy, everything has gone wrong. At 9 weeks my BP shot up and I was put on meds. At 18 1/2 weeks my cervix was found fully efface and 2cm dialated. I had a cerclage at 19 weeks, have been on strict bed rest since. I also have a home nurse that comes once a week to check me, baby, and to give me the progesterone shot. My OB would not lable me as high risk, she wanted me to see a perinatologist first, and he labeled me as high risk.

omg! that is so scary!! i've had alot of problems with my pregnancy's i have 2 boys i had my tubes tied and burnt 5 months ago! I told my SO omg! what if that happens with us.

Wow, what do you have??? My parents always tried to downplay how serious my heart condition so I could be as normal as possible which I was except for my yearly cadio appts but after I got pregnant and went through my whole ordeal I did lots of research and was amazed at how severe it really was .
There are over 35 known congentital heart defects it happens in 1 out of ever 100 births its the most common birth defect in the US and many other nations. Gosh we have come a long way!!!!
Not to scare you but they are 98% sure that it is hereditary although there is no history in my family and they said my daughter had a 50/50 chance of having one and she is perfect . they even did a fetal echo at 22 weeks to check her.
so if your kids haven't been checked by a cardiologist I would just to be safe. Some are less severe and can fly under the radar for a while and then suddenly the defect does its work and you know how it goes from there.
