Has anyone here had surgery for loud snoring or sleep apnea?
I am new to this group, but have been on cafemom for a while. My name is Heather and I am a SAHM to a sweet and very active 2.5 year old. I am wondering if anyone has had or known anyone who has had surgery for snoring or sleep apnea. I have both and I am scheduled to have surgery on Tues. I am starting to get very scared about the pain and recovery since I am having my tonsils removed, uvula trimmed, and tissue removed in my nose to breathe better. Any experiences from anyone would be great since I am really nervous about post-surgery pain. I responded to a lot of posts so hopefully some of you will look at this again.
My son did when he was 4. He snored SO LOUD!!! and he had apnea too. The surgery cleared it up with no further trouble. He was pretty down for about 2 days then he was back to his normal self

my husband had it done years ago and it didn't work. he ended up with a CPAP machine and that thing is wonderful. he doesn't snore at all now, and the machine makes a nice white noise that helps me sleep. ahhhhhh!
I've been told I snore like a man! So I'm really curious as to what made your doctor recomend surgery? My doctor says I have chronic nasal allergies and that's why I snore. I take claritin plus benadryl plus flonase every night and some nights I still snore. It drives my dh insane! I can tell when I snore because my dh moves to the oposite side of the bed (feet to my face) he says it's the only way he can get to sleep when I snore like that.
My dd snored like a man! It was soooo loud! I noticed though one night she stopped breathing than a few seconds later would gasp for air (sleep apnea) I brought her into the doctor and her tonsils were almost touching and that is why they recommended surgery for her. I thought it was weird considering she had no other health issues.

When I had my mastoidectomy on 05/06/08 they also went ahead and removed my adenoid because it was causing me all sorts of problems and it wasnt bad. I had more issues with my ears than i did with that. When you go home they will give you some drugs that last a few days and you wont feel anything other than you maybe a little dry and you cant breath through your nose you feel congested. They tell you not close your mouth when you sneeze you have to open your mouth and sneeze through your mouth, it is wierd but that is what they say. You need to keep your nose moist with saline spray for for about a week. Dont worry it is a breeze and it doesnt hurt.
My father had the whole what the DR.'s called a rotorooter done years ago.... tonsils, adenoids, soft pallet, uvula and they did something to his nasal passages as well. It took his a little longer to recover because he had it all done @ the same time. But after he was as quiet as a mouse!!! That was until a few years later after gaining about 30-40 lbs he started snoring again! so then came the CPAP. which worked until he started pulling it off while he was sleeping and didn't know he was doing it. He decided to diet and see if it was the weight or if it was just that the surgery didn't work. He did lose the weight and he is back to being quiet... so just a warning.. gaining weight can cause you to start snoring again. (at least it did my father) Best wishes and I hope you have a speedy recovery!

Thanks for the wondeful feedback. I never expected feedback this late at night. I am worried about the surgery not working very long too, but my dr. said it should work since it is not a weight issue. I am not overwieght and have snored all my life. He said that weight gain is what usually brings the snoring back years after the surgery not the surgery itself. I have allergies too and snore loud but I had a sleep study and tests done in the office that determined that my snoring and apnea are caused from not being able to breathe out of my nose, which I have always been a mouth breather and I can't breathe out of my nose well and because of enlarged tonsils and I have frequent sore tonsils and sore throats even at my age now. I feel better after all of your comments. I just worry because my husband is taking vacation this week and I was hoping to be able to take care of my son once he goes back to work next week, but the recovery looks like it could be very long and very painful. I am already missing out on Thanksgiving, but I wanted to be recovered to enjoy the entire month of December and now I am thinking that may not be completely possible.
