So I have a question for you all...my sister in law has a 2 year old (he turned 2 in april)...she is planning a flight with him in december...she said she didn't purchase a ticket for him. I know that you have to pay for a ticket for a child that is 24 months and up...she said they don't check and providing he is small for his age I guess she could get away with it...whats your take on this? I always assumed they asked to see a birth certificate...

I used to work at our local airport, and having done this before myself, I can say with certainty that:
If you are flying in and out of a big airport, they don't care. As long as the child obviously looks old enough to be 2, they don't care. BUT, if you are flying out of a smaller airport, you can forget about it. They will make you buy a ticket for the little one, and it will be extremely pricey. Like close to a G pricey. She would have been better off putting him down as an infant plus adult. U?sually they don't ask for birth certificates, unless you are flying out of the country. Good luck!
If the child looks like they are close to age 2, they will ask for a birth certificate. Actually I've flown with my son as an infant and he was obviously under 2 and I still had to show his birth certificate for certain airlines. She's going to be in for a bit of a shock when they tell her she needs to purchase a ticket for him and given how booked up flights get if they don't have a seat for him, she's going to be SOL.

I have been asked for my son's birth certificate when traveling on a domestic flight out of a large airport. He was also under a year old at the time so obviously he didn't look anywhere near 2 yrs old.
